About Us

News

We are a municipal shelter for the Town of Newburgh.  We do not take privately owned animals.   All of our animals for adoption have either been picked up off our streets or found injured and have gone unclaimed, or have been seized due to investigations of cruelty.

Please come visit our shelter and find out about all the wonderful donation funds that the Town has established to not only aid the cats, kittens and dogs at our shelter but also the feral cats.  Our T-92 account is used for a trap, spay and release program for the feral cats in the Town of Newburgh. Cats are captured with humane havahart traps, spayed and released to the area where they were found. A caregiver makes sure food is supplied.  Our T-93 account allows us to medically take care of the cats/kittens at the shelter.  This fund also pays for their spay/neuters, all vaccines, testing for feline leukemia/aids and worming. Donations are always appreciated for this account.

The last donation account that we have is called the T-94 account is used to medically treat our dogs that have special conditions such as being positive for heartworm, a leg that needs to be pinned, etc... We recently had two dogs test positive for heartworm and used this account to treat them. This account will, hopefully, someday (with your help)  be used to enlarge the size of our shelter so that we can be a model shelter for the animals in our community. In 2006 the shelter had a new roof and siding put on. During the month of October 2007, the insides of the dog kennels were renovated and in 2008 all the outdoor kennels were renovated and all painted. With volunteer help, the office, cat room and storage areas have all been updated w/ new furnishings and paint. Thanks to our great volunteers! We always welcome folks to help us especially if you are a handyman!!!  If interested in volunteering, feel free to stop in and fill out a volunteer application.

New Shelter Hours.  Monday-Friday viewing hours from 9am-5pm. Saturdays 9am-5pm.  However, please keep in mind, we do emergency road work so there isn't always someone here.  If that happens, please don't get upset...someday, it could be your animal we are responding to.

Adopting A Friend

If you like dogs and cats, we have wonderful guys and gals just sitting here as patienty as they can until "their" day comes to leave us. We will miss them because we love them all....but we know there is a better place "somewhere" with a special "someone" who will love them like we do.

Our adoption fees are as follows:  Dogs are $52.50 This fee includes spay/neuter, rabies vaccine. Our fee for Cats is $62.50.  Senior pet to senior citizen fee waived.  All cats/kittens are spayed/neutered, tested for feline leukemia and aids, receive rabies vaccine if old enough, distemper vaccine and are wormed,

Adoption applications must be completed with all vet records of any animals you may have had in the past and approved prior to adoption. Applications can be downloaded from our site and emailed to our address or fax to 845-561-2220 or can be completed at the shelter. We require 48 - 72 hrs to process the application. Photo Identification is required prior to viewing the animals. If you have lost or found a pet, go to http://www.lostandfound.us to see if your pet has been posted on this site. You can also place information and a picture of your lost pet at this site.

Who We Are

Our dogs and cats for adoption are advertised through various forms of media. We find dogs that are abandoned on the streets or at our door, abused in some way, or an owner fails to claim their dog when we find it.
The shelter staff sees that each dog receives the very best possible care. The shelter has 11 dog runs with outside access. We also have several outside kennels that allow the dogs to have fresh air and exercise. We feel it is very important for our dogs peace of mind. We also spend time with each dog in order to get to know them before being placed in a new home. We will help you find a dog suitable to your family and lifestyle.

We also have cats and kittens for adoption at the shelter.  We always care for them and spend quality time with them. Adoption fees are always lower for senior cats. We not only take care of the dogs and cats but also provide Animal Control work for residents when they come across an animal other than a dog or cat that needs our help.
