Our Featured Pets...
Our featured cats are Gabreal and Yuma. GABREAL is a male gray tabby about 2 years old. He had a traumatic experience that makes it hard for him to breathe at times but as long as he finds a quiet home, he will be your forever companion. He loves people and is pretty good with other cats. Come out and meet him and let him win you over.
YUMA is a female short haired calico cat about 3 yrs old. She came in to the shelter from the city pound. Yuma would love to go to a quiet home without small children and maybe one other cat to be buddies with. She has come a long way at the shelter. For a long time, she wouldn't even come out of her cage. She loves to be petted and given time and patience, she will become a great part of your family. For the most part she likes people, just not all of the other cats at the shelter. Come out to the shelter and meet her and let her win your heart.
Our featured dog is Lacey! She is a female Lab/Shepard mix who came into the shelter very pregnant. She has since given birth to her puppies, who have all found home and now it's Lacey's turn! She is only a year and a half old and still has some things to learn about proper doggy manners. She is house trained but still needs work on her leash manners and just basic obedience. Lacey would excel in obedience as long as you have the patience to train her. She would make a great farm dog as she was fostered on a farm with her puppies and stuck around pretty well. A city home would work well for her too as long as she got plenty of exercise. Come out and meet her!

WE CAN NOW GET BEDS FOR THE CATS TOO!!! PLEASE DONATE A BED OR A KITTY TOWER FOR OUR FELINE FRIENDS!!! Our dogs and cats love to sleep on Kuranda Pet beds, but we don't have enough for everyone. Do you have an animal at home you would like to have spayed or neutered? The shelter has a limited supply of coupons for families needing some help with altering their animals. The coupons are $15 off of a spay and $10 off of a neuter. For more information call the shelter or stop out and fill out a "Spay and Neuter application".
Keeping in mind that for every one child born in the USA, there are 10 pets born. This means unwanted pets that have to be euthanized. Do your part to control the pet population....."Spay and Neuter".
The James River Humane Society offers the "ResQ pet tracking" Micro-chip service. This can be done on your newly adopted pet or an existing pet. The cost is a $35 donation for this service. Each additional pet is $30. It's a good idea to have this proceedure done, if the pet becomes lost and loses the collar it could be their ticket home as the chip provides vital information to get your pet returned. This proceedure has become a must since the hurricane disaster.
Who We Are
Established in 1985, we are a non-profit, no-kill shelter set up to care for homeless dogs and cats. It is the policy of our shelter to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection in the area served by the shelter; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners; and to alleviate animal suffering.
Adopting a friend
Our adoption program includes a spay/neuter requirement. Please spay/neuter your pet to make sure they do not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem and to ensure a better world for pets and humans.

To adopt an animal from our shelter you must fill out an adoption application form. You may fill one out at the shelter or contact the person listed on the animal's site. Adoption fee is $100. All pets are current on shots, spayed/neutered, deworming, have vet check ups, and cats are FIV tested before adoptions. No animals are permitted to leave the shelter before being spayed/neutered. If a second animal is being adopted, a $25 discount will apply if the second animal is adopted within 30 days. After you have adopted, take your adoption papers into your nearest PETCO.
