Our Featured Pets...

Our featured cats are Gabreal and Princess. GABREAL is a male gray tabby about 2 years old. He had a traumatic experience that makes it hard for him to breathe at times but as long as he finds a quiet home, he will be your forever companion. He loves people and is pretty good with other cats. Come out and meet him and let him win you over.

PRINCESS is a female dilute calico about 2 years old. She came from the city pound to the shelter about a year ago and is still waiting for her forever home. It would probably be best if she found a home with no other pets or maybe just one other cat because she prefers a quiet environment. Come out and meet her at the shelter and let her win your heart.

Our "special needs" dog at the shelter right now is little, lovable Lexi. She is deaf and borderline blind so would need to go to a special home. Lexi will play with a rope or tennis ball as long as you don't throw it any distance. She will search for it until she finds it and loves the attention while you play with her. She just wants to be loved and wants to be by you. A home with a fenced in yard would be perfect for Lexi as she would need to be confined for her safety. With her deafness and limited sight, Lexi does startle easily so a home with older children and non-aggressive animals would be best for this little sweetheart. Come out and meet her!.

Do you have an animal at home you would like to have spayed or neutered? The shelter has a limited supply of coupons for families needing some help with altering their animals. The coupons are $15 off of a spay and $10 off of a neuter. For more information call the shelter or stop out and fill out a "Spay and Neuter application". Keeping in mind that for every one child born in the USA, there are 10 pets born. This means unwanted pets that have to be euthanized. Do your part to control the pet population....."Spay and Neuter".

The James River Humane Society offers the "ResQ pet tracking" Micro-chip service. This can be done on your newly adopted pet or an existing pet. The cost is a $35 donation for this service. Each additional pet is $30. It's a good idea to have this proceedure done, if the pet becomes lost and loses the collar it could be their ticket home as the chip provides vital information to get your pet returned. This proceedure has become a must since the hurricane disaster.

Who We Are

Established in 1985, we are a non-profit, no-kill shelter set up to care for homeless dogs and cats. It is the policy of our shelter to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection in the area served by the shelter; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners; and to alleviate animal suffering.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption program includes a spay/neuter requirement. Please spay/neuter your pet to make sure they do not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem and to ensure a better world for pets and humans.

To adopt an animal from our shelter you must fill out an adoption application form. You may fill one out at the shelter or contact the person listed on the animal's site. Adoption fee is $100. All pets are current on shots, spayed/neutered, deworming, have vet check ups, and cats are FIV tested before adoptions. No animals are permitted to leave the shelter before being spayed/neutered. If a second animal is being adopted, a $25 discount will apply if the second animal is adopted within 30 days. After you have adopted, take your adoption papers into your nearest PETCO. They will give you a savings coupon book with hundreds of dollars in food, supplies and toys.
