Our Featured Pets...

Our featured cat is Flomar. Flomar is a great cat and I really can't understand why he hasn't found the purrfect home yet. If I had the money for another cat he would be my first choice personally. He really is a very easy cat to care for. A little food her and some water there and of course some attention for good measure and he would be just fine. Flomar is very laid back and does great with other cats and dogs. Come and meet him and let him win you over.

Come out and meet Daisy! She is a female Chocolate Lab who is very enthusiastic about life. When she get really excited she jumps straight up in the air! She does have a few downfalls tho. One of them being that she is very hyper and is going to need an owner that is going to spend lots of time giving her exercise. Another one is that she is a bit overweight and should probably be on weight control food and have her food intake watched very closely(This is a little hard at the shelter). She does listen when she is wearing a choker and will walk very nicely. Daisy is quite the character and you have to come out and meet her to see the true Daisy.

Do you have an animal at home you would like to have spayed or neutered? The shelter has a limited supply of coupons for families needing some help with altering their animals. The coupons are $15 off of a spay and $10 off of a neuter. For more information call the shelter or stop out and fill out a "Spay and Neuter application". Keeping in mind that for every one child born in the USA, there are 10 pets born. This means unwanted pets that have to be euthanized. Do your part to control the pet population....."Spay and Neuter".

The James River Humane Society offers the "ResQ pet tracking" Micro-chip service. This can be done on your newly adopted pet or an existing pet. The cost is a $25 donation for this service. Each additional pet is $20. It's a good idea to have this proceedure done, if the pet becomes lost and loses the collar it could be their ticket home as the chip provides vital information to get your pet returned. This proceedure has become a must since the hurricane disaster.

Who We Are

Established in 1985, we are a non-profit, no-kill shelter set up to care for homeless dogs and cats. It is the policy of our shelter to provide humane care and treatment for animals needing protection in the area served by the shelter; to seek to return lost animals to their owners; to seek suitable homes for animals without owners; and to alleviate animal suffering.

Adopting a friend

Our adoption program includes a spay/neuter requirement. Please spay/neuter your pet to make sure they do not contribute to the pet overpopulation problem and to ensure a better world for pets and humans.

To adopt an animal from our shelter you must fill out an adoption application form. You may fill one out at the shelter or contact the person listed on the animal's site. Adoption fee is $100. All pets are current on shots, spayed/neutered, deworming, have vet check ups, and cats are FIV tested before adoptions. No animals are permitted to leave the shelter before being spayed/neutered. If a second animal is being adopted, a $25 discount will apply. After you have adopted, take your adoption papers into your nearest PETCO.
