[Narrator] If you're planning on going to the beach with your dog
there are some safety tips you should keep in mind.

[Narrator] Watch your dog closely for signs of overheating and sun exposure.
 Many people don't even realize
 that their dog is overheating.

[Narrator] That happy long tongue is letting you know you're dog is hot.

[Dog] How about a drink?

[Narrator] Heat stroke is a very real danger for your dog and may cause nausea, loss of consciousness, brain damage, and even death.

[Narrator] So make sure your dog has access to a nice shady place to cool off with plenty of fresh water to keep him cool and hydrated.

[Narrator] All dogs can get sunburned. If your dog has short fur, has recently been shaved, has light skin, or a pink nose, then he's extra vulnerable to sunburn.

[Narrator] Most dogs will burn on their nose, their ears, or their stomachs. The good news is that you can protect your dog with sunscreen.

[Narrator] Remember that the pavement and the sand can get very hot so do your best to walk your dog in the shade or on the grass.

[Narrator] Avoid letting your dog drink the ocean water. 
It can make him sick.
 Red tide, stingrays, sharks, riptides, and even sea lice are also potential problems lurking in the water.
 If there are warning signs posted, chose to visit the beach on another day.

[Narrator] Before you go home you should rinse off your dog with some fresh water. The salt water can make your dog's skin itchy.
