we're gonna teach your dog to wave.

[onscreen action] Woman getting her dog to wave.

[narrator] Here's how you do it.

[onscreen action] Woman motioning for her dog to sit.


[narrator] First, have your dog sit while facing you.

[onscreen action] Woman raising the dog’s paw several times.

[narrator] Then, gently lift his paw with your hand,
praise him, and give him a treat.

Repeat this until your dog is comfortable
with you reaching for his paw.

Now we're going to soften your touch.

Lightly lift your dog's paw into your hand.

[onscreen action] Dog lifts it’s paw without the woman’s help.

[narrator] With some practice,
your dog should start to lift his paw on his own.

Next, extend your hand again,
but this time don't lift your dog's leg.

[onscreen action] Dog lifts it’s paw and is rewarded by the woman.

[narrator] When he offers his paw, reward him with treats or praise.

[onscreen action] Woman motions for the dog to wave and says wave.

[narrator] Now you're ready to add your verbal cue.

Say wave,
and then motion with your hand as you wave backwards.

[onscreen action] Woman practices waving with the dog.
Woman rewards the dog.

Generously reward you dog for raising his paw,
even if it's just a little bit.

The higher he raises his paw,
the more generous and excited you should get.

Keep practicing,
and in a short while your dog can do this.
