***Please note that we prefer to adopt guinea pigs in pairs, unless they have come into our program as a solo pet and/or do not get along with other guinea pigs***Guinea pigs are social animals who do best with the companionship of another pig. Preventing a solitary guinea pig from becoming lonely and bored is a tall order, even for someone committed to spending a significant amount of time with their animal every day.
Guinea pigs need time out of their cage every day. Whether this time is spent stretching their legs and exploring new environments or cuddling in your lap, daily interaction and attention are essential for a guinea pig's well-being.
Guinea pig's cage will need thorough clean every 3-7 days depending on the type of bedding you use. If you are a parent adopting a guinea pig for your children, please note that children rarely accept this responsibility so note that if you adopt, plan to be the one cleaning the cage.
The adoption fee or purchase price for a guinea pig is typically small, but there are significant startup costs and ongoing needs. The initial purchase of equipment and supplies is likely to include:
-Large cage or modular enclosure.
-Bedding material. Paper bedding is better than wood, as wood shavings can give off volatile compounds—especially when overly dirty—which can cause respiratory and foot problems.
-A small box for hiding.
-Food dish.
-Water bottle.
-High-quality food pellets.
-Timothy hay.
-Toys and Treats.
Guinea pigs make a distinctive wheeking or whistling type sound, often in anticipation of getting a favorite treat or when in need of some attention. Though generally not loud enough to annoy the neighbors, a wheeking guinea pig can be surprisingly loud. If you're looking for an animal whose vocals will never interrupt a dinner party or afternoon nap, a guinea pig might not be for you.
Guinea pigs live an average of five to seven years. This lifespan is longer than many other small pets such as hamsters, gerbils, mice or rats, all of whom only live up to a few years.
Apply to adopt our guinea pigs at http://www.troyanimalrescueproject.org/adopt.php - The adoption fee is $25.
