Meet Chiquita!

Chiquita is a female Campbell's Russian Dwarf hamster who was surrendered to us in June 2022. Our best guess is that she is 8-10 months old but it's very difficult to determine a hamster's age.

Chiquita is a special needs adoption due to a spine deformity that is the result of bad breeding practices at the rodent mills that supply pet stores. This is the second hamster with this condition that's come to our rescue over the past few months.

In one of her photos she can be seen on running on her wheel. The hump on her back just behind her head is not normal. For now Chiquita is not much affected by her condition and it does not cause her pain. Her enclosure has been modified to allow for easier movement and high places have been eliminated. However as she grows older and her spine begins to deteriorate, further modifications to her home and pain management and regular monitoring by a vet will become necessary.

Chiquita is a hands-off hammy. She does not care for hands in her house or trying to touch her. Due to her temperament and her chronic medical condition Chiquita is a special needs hammy available only to highly experienced owners. She is known to bite but we are able to pick her up using a small pet carrier to move her around. She very much enjoys her playpen time outside of her bin cage.
