Meet Bubblegum, Candy & Science

Fostered in Worcester, MA .

UPDATE 4/6/24:

“We have come a long way, and I have a better grasp of these girls’ needs.

Science doesn’t bite while outside of the cage – it really seems like she just chooses ‘bite first, ask questions later’ when touched inside the cage. It really doesn’t matter if she sees you coming or not, she’ll at least nip. I’ve tried hard to get her out of this habit, and she has improved a bit, but I’m not sure I can get farther with her myself. She is VERY amicable when baby food is offered! I take her out on the couch with me regularly via a fleece sack, and she often will just sit in my lap and nap, or slowly explore.

Candy is VERY adverse to being touched at all. Treats are not helpful. She is absolutely best to just leave alone and only grab in emergencies. She runs instead of biting, preferring to just scream instead of taking a page out of Science’s book. However, she will climb up onto my arm for treats, so it’s not crazy hard to get her to a play area or carrier. She is VERY slippery and small.

Bubblegum won’t sit still for petting but tolerates all touches/grabs/moving. She has learned that “up!” means to climb on my shoulder!!

This trio contains a wide range of handleability. However, they have still greatly improved since their intake, and may continue in their forever home. All three beg for attention when you walk by – they just change their minds as soon as the door is opened lol! Please consider taking these ladies home if you have experience with antisocial rats!”

UPDATE 1/30/24:

“This trio is in need of a loving, patient, and experienced forever home! They appear very young and tiny (and growing!), and with very little – if any at all – human handling before I got them. They are very active and LOVE their big running wheel. They need more help getting used to humans and handling, but we’ve come far in a month and a half! Whoever adopts these three will be so lucky!!

Bubblegum is a wild child but is currently the most comfortable being handled. While she doesn’t enjoy being picked up, she tolerates it with very little dramatic squeaking now! She is very energetic and not a very good shoulder rat, but so much fun to watch during playtime. She is easily led out onto your arm/shoulder with treats – she wins the “most improved” award of the trio lol!

Science is in need of a human parent that can train her out of her very clear cage aggression. I often affectionately call her ‘Miss Chomps’. She will bite fingers that try to touch or pick her up in the cage (the severity of bite matches how much you’re disturbing her lol) – but, once she’s out during playtime or out on a shoulder, she is very amicable and sweet. I am willing to take the abuse from her to help her lol! I’ve been working with her on this every day, so I forsee her needing a long time of handling & training to stop the biting – but I’m no expert. She is the least energetic of the trio. She has fallen asleep nestled in the crook of my neck once!

Candy is the most cautious of the three girls. She absolutely will NOT be touched! Although, she just runs away very fast. She has nipped me while trying to pick her up a few times in the beginning, but nothing crazy. She will need the most help out of these three to keep adjusting to human contact in general. She’s very shy, still a bit jumpy, but has improved so much these 6 weeks. She was terrified of my hands – but thanks to fingers tipped with baby food, is okay climbing onto my hand with all 4 paws for a brief moment to claim the treat. We are getting there! :)”
