Meet Timone
Timone came to Reptilia from Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) after being confiscated from a roadside zoo. Timone, along with some other reptiles underwent parasite testing and vet checks prior to entering Reptilia's adoption program.
ENCLOSURE:
The bigger the better, but no smaller than 48" x 24" x 24" for an adult.
SUBSTRATE:
Bearded dragons will do best on a substrate that they can burrow in. A mixture of soil, sand, peat moss and mulch is fantastic. There are many myths surrounding impaction, however this will not be an issue provided all other parameters are met inside your enclosure.
HIDES:
Offer ample hiding space with at least one hide on the warm side and one on the cool side.
LIGHTING:
Bearded dragons require a day and night cycle, as well as UVB during the day. A basking lamp as well as a 12-14% T5 for UVB is required.
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY:
75-80°F on the cool side and 85-90°F on the warm side. Basking spot should be 95-110°F. Humidity levels are best between 40-55%
DIET:
Omnivores. A mixture of insects and vegetation is required. Insects such as crickets, BSFL and cockroaches are great staples, with occasional superworms, hornworms and silkworms as treats. Leafy greens such as collard greens, dandelion greens, swiss chard, and carrot tops are great, paired with other vegetables such as bell peppers, sweet potato, butternut squash and carrots. Fruit sparingly as a treat.
Avoid items such as romaine lettuce, iceberg lettuce, cucumber, etc. as these are high in water content and low in nutrients. Avoid feeding large quantities of kale over extended periods of time.
WATER:
Offer fresh water from a dish at all times.
SHEDDING:
Increase humidity during shedding. Shedding happens over a few days in pieces.
TEMPERAMENT:
Bearded dragons can be very personable and inquisitive pets. Great beginner lizard, but require lots of space and enrichment!
LIFESPAN:
Bearded dragons live for an average of 12-15 years.
