Western Paint's Story

Update 07MAY2009: The boys were adopted to a home with a backyard pond, and we hope to have pictures of them in thier new home later in the month.

These two 4.5" young adult male western painted turtles (Chrysemys picta bellii) were for adoption in the Baltimore area. The original owner requested that they be adopted together, so they'd need at least a 75 gallon tank - bigger if possible. They're healthy and eating Reptomin pellets and greens. They SHOULD NOT be kept in close contact with females of any species unless you have a several hundred gallon pond with lots of hide spots, as male painteds are known to harrass females. Western painteds can be adopted in all of the mid-Atlantic states, and if you have a fenced-in backyard pond, they can live year-round outside.

Painteds need care similar to sliders, and can live for 20-60 yrs, and males can grow to be 5-7". They need large indoor aquariums or ponds, a basking spot, and water filtration. Indoor ponds and aquariums require a haul-out spot, a.k.a. basking spot, a heat light over a basking spot, a UVB light over the basking spot, a high-powered filter, and usually a water heater. Outdoor ponds must be in an escape-proof yard or the pond itself must be escape-proof. If you have a backyard pond, the turtle can't go outside for the first time until May, but can live year-round outside after that.

Please review our adoption requirements for aquatic turtles at http://www.matts.petfinder.com if interested in adopting a turtle. Request an adoption application and care sheet from matts_adoptions@hotmail.com. Please include your city and state when contacting MATTS.
