Meet Doug

Doug is 14 years old and weighs 15-20 pounds.

I had been living all my life with my dad who is an older gentleman, but he had to move in with his daughter and I wasn't able come along.

Right now I am living with a wonderful foster mom and have resumed my beloved daily walks as I could smell all those good outdoor smells and be vigilant for rats—haha—I am a rat terrier after all! When I'm done with my walks, (I am great on the leash by the way) I just like to snuggle down and cuddle on the couch. I am pretty easy-going in that respect. I do have a thing about my sides being touched. They are a bit sensitive. Never been able to figure that out. Probably like humans being ticklish in weird places. I also have a thing about wood and linoleum floors. I grew up in a carpeted environment, so I am hesitant about crossing those floors. I will do so with gentle coaxing and with daily practice I have been getting better. Not so scary anymore. Nothing this guy can't learn to ignore!

Since I was raised in a solitary environment I didn't have much interaction with children or dogs, but my foster family brings in small children frequently and the only danger seems to be in my licking them to death. Those little children sure do smell good! Small dogs don't worry me as we are about the same size. However, that said, my foster mom has been introducing me to dogs of all shapes and sizes and you know what? I kind of like them. If I don't, or they make me nervous, then I just pretend they aren't there and that works just fine. I can defend myself however, especially when there is food around. I do not like it when people or others try and interact when I am eating. That is my time to nourish myself and relax and it makes me a wee tense when I am bothered. I have nipped out in the past when that happens, Note, I said nipped, not bitten. I don't know how else to warn people since I cannot talk properly. I will follow proper commands such as: Come here, and Sit. See, I can be good--wait, I am good.

There is nothing quite as good as a big soft bed either. I do like it better when the bed is somewhere safe, like under a table. That way I can survey my territory and sleep in peace. My crate is a good place to feel that way too.

One more thing before I go for dinner. I may be 14, but boy is my hearing good. I can hear that doorbell and will bark for you to hear it. So don't worry about intruders with me around. If it is you at the door then I will wag my tail and greet you happily.

Although I am happy with my foster mom, and she is teaching me better manners (apparently I do well on a leash I heard her say), everyday I yearn for my forever home. I promise to be a gentleman if you adopt me and will do my best not to be an old curmudgeon. Old dogs can learn new tricks!

Interested in Doug? The first step is to fill out our online Adoption Application (address link below)

Note: All of our dogs live in foster homes so it is not possible to setup a meet and greet prior to submitting an adoption application. Filling out an application doesn't obligate you to adopt, but it does save your place in line if there are multiple people interested.

ADOPTION APPLICATION (Type or cut & paste the below website address into your browser): http://www.sdroregon.com/adoption-application.htm

If our Adoption Coordinator determines you are a good match they will contact you. This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about Doug and decide if you would like to setup a meet and greet.

ADOPTION FEE is $150, and there’s a 10% Discount for Senior Citizens and Veterans.

Learn more about the ADOPTION PROCESS here (Type or cut & paste the below website address into your browser): http://www.sdroregon.com/adoption-process.htm

We apologize, but we are not able to answer individual questions about our dogs. We are a small, all-volunteer organization and we receive hundreds of inquiries. If you want to learn more about a particular dog, then please submit an Adoption Application. If your application is chosen, you will have the opportunity to meet the dog and to get answers to all of your questions. Thank you for your understanding.
