Meet Dixie

Meet Dixie! This boxer girl now 51# (close to goal 55#) looks like a senior but two different veterinarians have examined her and estimate her age to be 3 years old. She is "super sweet" and good with other dogs. She was found to have an arthritic lumbar spine condition and is currently trialing 2 different medications to reduce her pain with positive results already seen. Her arthritis may require lifelong medication to manage her pain. She so far chooses not to run or move quickly, but she does enjoy walks when not on post heart worm treatment activity restrictions. She climbs up on couches okay, does steps okay but will likely do best where she doesn’t have to climb a flight of stairs multiple times per day.
Dixie loves to be outside. Loves cushy dog beds, sharing a couch with her people and peanut butter. She is such a good dog.
She is a gem behaviorally, gentle with all, perfect house manners, walks very well on a leash and is currently a lower energy dog (which will help with heartworm treatment). She is housetrained and crate trained. Gentle with children, good with other dogs, does well out in public (calm), walks well on a leash. Very well behaved in the house. Greets people politely, likes all people.

On 8/12/19, Dixie unfortunately tested positive for heartworm disease. She got this by being bitten by an infected mosquito. She is not contagious to other dogs (but all dogs should be on heartworm prevention monthly, year-round to prevent infection/reinfection). Underdog has started Dixie on treatment for heartworm, and with proper after-care, she will fully recover. Her adopter will simply need to bring Dixie to scheduled treatment appointments and keep her CALM (with strict crate rest or supervised relaxation) post treatment injections (for 2-3 months). We provide adopters with instructions and will cover needed meds. Dogs who are treated for heartworm have a positive likelihood of recovery when post-treatment instructions and rest are followed.

Deworming
Heartworm and Flea/Tick Preventative
Any other necessary medical treatment as recommended by veterinarian
