Peanut Labrador Retriever Mix New Smyrna Beach, FL

This is Peanut. His owner left him and his brother, Scottie, at Orange County Animal Services in January. They were both very shy and were “Rescue Only.” They were being fostered for about a month. One night they were left outside and Scottie was run over and killed in front of Peanut. I have been fostering Peanut since that time (2 weeks on March 12th).
The vet thinks Peanut is about 3 years old. He is a lab/sheltie mix. He weighs 45 pounds. He is neutered, dewormed and has all of his shots. I will sponsor his adoption fee.
Peanut has spent his whole life living outdoors and was neglected. The short time he has been with me, he has been inside. He loves living inside. He sleeps all night in his bed. I have a fenced yard and have been working with him and he is housebroken now. He has been through so many changes the last couple of months, and he is very shy.
When he was at the shelter, they could not get him to walk on a leash. I have been working with him and getting him used to the leash. I am now able to take him for daily walks without any problem. I have been crating Peanut and he is doing well. He is a very smart dog.
I have three puggles and Peanut gets along well with them. He does have food aggression (working on correcting this), so I feed him separately for now. I have an eight-year-old neighbor who comes over to visit Peanut and he likes her. She has a shy rescue dog and she is gentle with Peanut. I would recommend a home with no small children because of his shyness.
Peanut would do best with a family who will understand him and work with him. He is a very loving boy. His ideal home would have a fenced yard where he can go out supervised and run and play.
With a little time and understanding, he warms up quickly. He has so much love to give and loves to please you. Peanut deserves a good home and a family to love him.

He is a very loving boy and wants to be a part of a family and gets much happiness from pleasing you. He is crate trained and does not have any issues or accidents in his “house.” He does get along with other dogs and cats, but does have food aggression towards the dogs and probably cats, but not with people. He is pretty much potty trained. He is very motivated by treats and sometimes I have to remind him to go pee-pee or potty if he wants to get his treats. He is so afraid that we will leave him outside, that he will run back to the porch door to go back in, but when I remind him about the treats, he will go. As you know, he spent his whole life outside. He loves living inside. He is not destructive and does not tear up anything such as shoes or furniture. He would do well with other dogs, but I think he would be fine as an only pet also, as he loves attention and seems to want to attach to one person. Although he has come a long way with the leash, he still does not getting the leash on. I feel like he was probably hit with a leash. He does well once on the leash, but does not like to go potty while on the leash. I walk him about everyday and he will not go potty while on the leash. He will go in the fenced yard. For that reason, he would do best with a fenced yard.
