Meet Nala

UPDATE: Apps for Nala close on Thursday, April 25
NOTE: Nala's arthritis means she has to have certain accomodations. She will need a home with either no stairs or only one or two. For car rides, a ramp to get in and out of the car is best as the arthritis means she is sensitive to how she is picked up.

In Swahili, Nala means “gift.” When she first made her home with her foster family, Nala was a diamond in the rough. Found as a stray, most likely just dumped in the country, she was so very, very timid and her coat was missing large patches. She began her time in foster in July and for the first few days, needed quiet and just little doses of attention. She has really come a long way since then – her personality has come out and she’s turned into a very gentle, loving dog. Her health has likewise bounced back – her coat has come back thick, her weight has stayed stable (at 28 lbs) and she’s surprised us with her bursts of energy and her desire to be active. The best vet estimate we have on Nala’s age is 7 years.

Nala’s favorite thing in the world is car rides, especially when they end up at Starbucks. She loves her walks but will always head for the car first when you put her leash on and take her out – ever hopeful. While she’s not a fan of walking in the rain, she does well at all other times, showing off her good manners on a loose leash. Her favorite place to stroll is the grounds of Furman University, where she gets lots of attention from the students! When they slack off on the petting, Nala will gently nudge them to get them started again.

While walks are fun, Nala isn’t game for long hikes or vigorous outings, preferring to keep her excursions to a half mile or so. She gets the rest of her energy out playing tug of war with her sock, chewing on her favorite rawhide and playing fetch with her ball.

Nala has been exposed to cats, but only at the vets, where she paid them no attention. She has not been fostered with another dog but has been polite when meeting them out and about. With children she’s calm and seems to enjoy having them love on her. A typical corgi, however, she can get over excited when she has a toy and you try to take it from her, so we will not be recommending a placement in a home with small children. Kids who are 10 years or older should be fine.

While she has the corgi trait of stubbornness, Nala is also surprisingly patient and has a 6th sense for folks that aren’t feeling their best. She’ll go to them, lay close and lick their hand. Her foster feels that this extra sense might give her great potential as a therapy dog, if someone were too chose to go through training with her.

The perfect family to take this girl with the heart of a lion into their pride? One that will give her attention and will enjoy going for short walks and taking her on trips and errands. A couple or a family that will want to hang out with her and let her be social. A home with a fenced yard would be a plus as well as Nala enjoys spending time outdoors.

If you live in the states of NC, SC, or GA and think Nala would be the perfect dog for you, please submit an application. Nala’s adoption fee will be $250.
