Meet Minnie

Minnie is a very pretty, female Poodle with nice conformation, refined features and a black coat. She's the perfect size to carry, weighing only 9 pounds. Sadly, she came into our care because her owner was dying and no one else was willing or able to take Minnie in. She's new here at Poodle Rescue of Houston, so her personality will show more as she has time to settle in, but I'll tell you my observations after spending a little quality time with her.

She was a perfect lady when I went to take her out of her kennel. She's like arm candy to carry. She was a bit stoic with me at first. If I could transfer her demeanor into human terms it was as if she was wearing the perfect little black dress, sitting up straight with good posture, and had her best pearls on. She wasn't unfriendly but she didn't particularly want to make direct eye contact. It was almost as if she was saying "I know something's not right and I sense I'm in a bit of a jam here, but I'm not going to let you see me sweat or appear insecure". So since I was a total stranger to her, she was a tad shy/reserved when we met and was shivering almost undetectably and yet was trusting, calm, quiet and gentle.

Minnie obviously enjoyed it when I scratched her, especially on the tops of her hips. I put a quilt down in one of our small play yards and sat down on it. I asked her in a high pitched playful voice if she was a silly girl. She came right over to me and I could swear she gave me a mischievous look. Then she looked unsure for just a second and then climbed up into my lap and was content to let me pet her. It wasn't long before she left my lap to go look at her surroundings and listen to the birds chirping. She's not one of those really needy or licking kind of little dogs. She's more independent and may possibly be happier to sit beside you or at your feet than in your lap for long periods of time. At one point, I sat in a chair in the play yard. She walked over to me and acted like maybe she didn't want to jump up but definitely wanted to be picked up. I obliged, and then petted her softly. Mostly I just tried to let her take things at her own pace. Perhaps her owner has been ill for some time; we have no way of knowing. But since she was given over to our care, it's probably not a stretch to surmise that Minnie has not been a high priority on anyone's list for some time when it comes to getting attention. At the very least she's got to be wondering how she came to find herself in a rescue situation and she may also be grieving. I must say though, that several times I tried to see if she had a playful side to her and once she came over and did a play bow and skittered a bit from side to side. There may be a bit of a silly girl behind the stoicism she is projecting now. And for those of you poodle lovers who know what I mean when I say "poodle zoomies" I think Minnie may do those on rare occasions and that's always a treat to watch.

One thing is certain... Minnie is a beautiful girl with many good years left and is so very deserving of a loving forever home. I think she will likely fit best in an all adult home where someone is home most of the time and wants company and a loyal companion. If only we, as humans, could handle adverse situations with as much grace as Minnie. Please come meet her and see if you have space in your heart and home for her.
