Meet Slater

FOSERTING NEAR DAVENPORT IOWA

Slater is a sweet, loving and easy going 11-year-old boy who gets along well with everyone he meets! He is a very easy keeper! He loves dogs both big and small and is cat safe. He loves people including children, and is happiest when he can curl up on the couch under a blanket next to his family. Slater is happy to go into his crate at night and when his foster mom has to go somewhere and looks forward to the special treat he will get, He’s not too happy about going outside when the cold winter wind is blowing, but can be bribed with treats. Slater enjoys toys with squeakers and can spend hours chasing and barking at the squirrels in the backyard so we want Slater placed in a home with a fenced yard as this is how he can comfortably get his exercise. He walks well on a leash, but he can’t go for walks anymore due to the pain it causes in his front legs. He takes joint supplements and is fine around the house and yard, but if he does strenuous exercise it causes him pain. Slater entered rescue 4 yrs ago weighing almost 25 lbs, but with a healthy diet and exercise, he is now a slim, healthy and beautiful 13 lbs. He is very fond of eating, and so his foster family has to be careful not to leave food where he can reach it, and if he finds the pantry door open even a crack, he will get in and start helping himself. Slater was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease 4 years ago and was put on medication until it started causing problems with his kidneys and liver. After being off of the medication for a while, tests showed no sign of the Cushing’s disease (for over three years now--he is in remission) so he is currently only taking a thyroid medication for low thyroid and a joint supplement. He will require occasional bloodwork (really necessary for all older dogs) to make sure that his kidneys and liver continue to function normally. His last bloodwork results prior to his dental in November showed his kidneys and liver at normal ranges. He has had no additional problems due to the Cushing’s since the medication was stopped over 3 years ago. With the cushings diagnosis years ago, there is no way to know how this might affect him in the long-term; he could live a long, healthy life, or the tumor in his pituitary gland could decide to grow, causing issues. Slater has 2-3 seizures per year but since it is very infrequent and they are short lasting, he does not require medication. He has not had any seizures since moving to his new foster home over 3 months ago. He did have a dental cleaning this November. Prior to his surgery, they did find a mild heart murmur, not causing him any issues or symptoms, and mild cardiac disease, most likely due to him being morbidly obese years ago. This is something that will need to be monitored yearly at his vet checkups. This little guy is incredibly sweet and can’t wait to find a forever home that will give him all of the love and attention he knows he deserves! He has been waiting a looooooong time!

Please visit us at midwestigrescue.com to learn more about the adoption process and to fill out an application. We do require an adoption donation fee to help us cover the cost of vetting while they are in our care. This fee varies depending on their age.

Our application process consists of a completed application, vet and two personal reference checks and home visit. We do require that your resident pets be spayed or neutered and have routine veterinary care and check-ups.

Our dogs are available for adoption in Nebraska and Iowa and will be considered for adoption to surrounding states (within a reasonable day drive). We DO NOT transport or ship dogs. You would be responsible for picking up from foster home. If you are in a state other than NE or IA, you will need to work with your state's IGCA representative in order to get your application processed and approved before being considered. Please use the website igrescue.com to find your state's affiliate and rescue representative. Thank you for your understanding!
