Shiro American Eskimo Dog Elmhurst, IL

This is Chicagoland Eskie Rescue's Shiro! Shiro is an adorable 2-4 year old, 16 lb., Japanese Spitz. Just like a young Eskie, he is full of energy and spunk! Shiro is smart, he knows a few commands, SIT, DOWN, PAW or HIGH FIVE....and he can do it with each paw too! We are still working on the STAY command....right now he doesn't really have the time to stay still for more than maybe 8-9 seconds! LOL! Shiro loves to RUN and play a good game of cat & mouse......aka catch me if you can! He will dart forward, then turn and race back, over and over again. He is just starting to listen and obey the COME command better. Shiro is improving on leash and enjoys going for walks. He is also VERY treat motivated, which helps in training! Shiro is rather aloof, especially when first meeting him. He has the personality of....I'm cute and I know it, therefore I should be the boss. Shiro's personality goes further with the attitude of ....go ahead and convince me, or BRIBE me, that this is a good idea.....for whatever "this" is that you are asking him to do. BUT the good news is that he can be bribed! ;-) So yes, he can be just a bit stubborn! How unusual for a Spitz, right! LOL! Shiro does not bond quickly, he is slow to really warm up. He needs to spend time checking out his environment, getting used to new routines, and learning to trust new people on his terms. The perfect home for Shiro is someone who understands the Spitz breed/American Eskimo Dogs, plus giving him space, time and patience to warm up. He needs someone who can provide enough exercise for a young, active Spitz, and is willing to do some serious training to teach him respect and trust of who is the true boss. Shiro also needs a strong, confident owner who can build his confidence too. NO small, young children, he may growl or snap and has no experience with kids. NO dogs, he doesn't like large dogs and can be a bully to small dogs. NO cats, he barks and growls, plus will chase them down. No apartments, condos, town homes with shared walls with neighbors, he is a barker and likes to voice his opinion! Shiro is being fostered in the Chicagoland area! We prefer a local adopter for Shiro, out-of-state adopters must be experienced with dogs and the breed. All out-of-state adopters must come to Chicago to meet and adopt.
