Meet Turk

Meet Turk!

Turk is a 5 year old dane that came to the rescue when his family could no longer afford his care and moved away. Turk came to us pretty skinny, not UTD on vaccines and not neutered..

Turk is a regal and handsome boy, well mannered and calm around other people.

He's a bit of a loner. He has lived with other dogs and cats, and he does ok with some as long as they are not hyperactive and/or dominant. He will not tolerate dominant or hyper dogs though. He's also not one to actively seek out their affection, attention or play. He's more aloof. He could care less about cats. He's much more attuned to his humans. He strongly prefers human companionship above all else.

Whoever adopts Turk needs to understand that he needs to be king, he does not share, he is dominant, and you can expect him to be a jerk around your other dogs for the first month or so. It takes him a long while to decompress and get used to his new surroundings, particularly around other dogs. HE NEEDS TO BE INTRODUCED SLOWLY. There is an acclimation period which Turk requires, and he can often act like out with the other dogs in the household, but with patience, discipline and time - he eventually he will come around. It is hard work though.

On that same note, young kids can be loud and unpredictable too, and he can be scared by them. But as you can see by his pictures, once he learns you're ok, you've got a friend for life. But again, it takes time and patience. And he will test your patience.

For that reason though, we'd prefer Turk to go to a dane savvy household with older children over age 8, or none at all. And unless you have experience in dominant and possessive behavior and are willing to separate for a long transition period, TURK NEEDS TO BE AN ONLY DOG.

But he's absolutely perfect with humans.

Turk would make an excellent companion for a single person or someone who works from home. Turk shows separation anxiety when his human leaves. He doesn't like being left alone for long periods of time. He will tolerate a crate, but he doesn't like it. And he's entirely too smart for his britches and has been able to figure out how to sneak out of his crate at times and open doorknobs to get to his humans. (We told you he is smart... we weren’t kidding!)

Turk would love a companion willing to take him on their daily journies, as he is an excellent car rider and is so well mannered in public. He's great on a leash. He's calm and collected in public. He's so regal, people are drawn to him. He is a regal gentleman for his humans. He loves them so. He just doesn't like to share with other dogs.

As you can clearly see, he loves his woobie. He carries it everywhere he goes. And even with a woobie, he still remains so regal! How is that possible?
