Meet Dmitri the Velcro kitty

Zdravstvuj, which means 'hello' in Russian! My name is Dmitri, and I'm a sweet, gentle, mellow, loving, and lovable medium-haired Russian Blue mix (technically called a Nebelung mix) gent. I was named after Dmitri Shostakovich, one of my sponsor's favorite composers. My coat is like a shimmering grey mist or cloud, and I have gorgeous jade green eyes as well as a big fluff of a tail.
My foster meowmy calls me 'Velcro kitty personified' because I like to stick by her. I either rub against her or lie down beside her so I can touch her -- literally all the time! And when she walks around, I follow her from room to room -- just like a dog. After being an outdoor stray, I was so starved for human affection that now I can't help myself but be a Velcro kitty. Sometimes I just have to pinch myself that I really do have a cozy home and a loving, nurturing meowmy again!
I'm also a big talker -- every day I tell her how much I appreciate being rescued. And during our quiet moments together, I just turn on my purr motor! I enjoy my daily naps, and I show how comfortably I've adapted to my new home by sleeping on my back, extremities splayed out.
I guess you're wondering how and why a fantastic dude like me ended up needing a new home. Buster's Friends got a call about my precarious predicament: my human meowmy had end-stages of cancer and had moved into an assisted living center. Meowmy had no immediate family, but her mean nephew decided to sell her house and to boot me outside. Fortunately the kind couple next door fed me, but they couldn't take me inside because the hubby is allergic to cat dander. So I spent about six weeks as an outdoor stray and lived only one house away from a busy street. Yikes! Fortunately I survived! I'm a friendly guy, so I had fun making new friends with all the neighbors, but, I admit, the hardscrabble outdoor life is not for me.
Buster's Friends found a wonderful lady who agreed to foster me, and I went to my first vet visit in five years. (Formerly the vet had estimated my birthday to be in January 2005, but that's just speculation.) I passed my physical with flying colors! (Nebelung mixes are a hearty, healthy lot.) The vet was impressed that my muscle mass was superb. He also admired my coat and said, 'I wish that I had a cat with such a coat.' My test results all fell within normal parameters, and the vet said that my kidneys, heart, thyroid, liver, red/ white blood cells, sugar level were all in great shape. The only things that needed to be addressed were dental plaque and struvite crystals in my urine. I've already had my teeth cleaned, but (for the rest of my life) I do have to eat prescription urinary-tract food from the vet (not over the counter) to eliminate the struvite crystals and to keep them from recurring. (I want to avoid bladder stones at all costs!!) But heck, food is easy to dispense compared to other senior kitties' needing subcutaneous fluids, insulin injections, or medications!
I get along great with the other two kitties in my foster home. I'm still a little tentative about the resident dog -- especially since my encounters with dogs as a stray were not always pleasant. I figure the best defense is a good offense, so I'll occasionally swat the dog just to let him know who's boss and keep him on his toes. (Which totally confuses the dog, since the other kitties are sweet to him.)
As much as I adore my foster meowmy and my temporary foster home, I'm hoping to find a forever home. I'll need a compassionate family who will overlook my age by calendar years, see how fit and spry I am, and give this healthy older gent a chance to spend his golden years in luxury. Is prescription food from the vet too much to ask? Your kindness will be greatly rewarded because I have lots of love stored up -- just waiting for you. I promise to 'stick closer to you than a brother,' shower you with attention, and to have plenty of deep conversations with you. Come meet me today! I think you'll find my mesmerizing green eyes too much to resist, and hopefully you'll take me home with you!
Dmitri is updated on shots, neutered, dewormed, FIV/ FeLV negative, microchipped, and ready for his indoor-only home. No de-clawing permitted.
