Meet Mack

MACK is a 5 year old Gordon Setter. He is a very sturdy 70#, and about 25" at the shoulder.

Mack grew up in a multi-dog outdoor pen with little opportunity to learn about the world and unfortunately, an untreated medical condition that left him prone to seizures.

Since entering our Rescue Program he has begun to blossom. He is crate trained and well on his way to being house trained. He has attended formal obedience classes to solidify the basic commands that he has been learning in his foster home. He loves attending the class and is neither intimidated by, not forward with the other Beginner dogs in the class. He is very food motivated but does have trouble remembering his training when there is no food treat involved!

Mack has a get-along attitude about life. He is very loving with humans and wants to be with them, in their lap if at all possible. He is non-confrontational with other dogs and is very submissive when another dog corrects him for any apparent infraction of doggy etiquette. He has interacted with cats in his foster home and seems to ignore them.

Mack LOVES to go for a daily walk around the neighborhood and to play in a fenced backyard. He prefers that his person be there to play with him and does not like to be left in the yard on his own. He does not seem to be a fence-jumper. But, Mack will dig to make a cool place to lay down, or just to see what might be there!

He does have a great deal of interest in birds, bunnies and squirrels on his daily walks and will pull on his leash to investigate. Mack is a strong dog but can be managed by most dog-knowledgeable adults. Because of his size, we are not recommending him for a home with small children. But older children would probably be OK. In fact, Mack likes meeting children on his walks.

Mack’s seizures continue to be well controlled by his medication, which must be given multiple times per day and on a consistent schedule. At this time, he receives two medications that cost about $100 per month. He also must have periodic tests to evaluate the drug level in his blood.

We are looking for a special home for Mack, willing to accept him as he is, and continue to provide training and his needed medical care. Due to his history of seizures, Mack should live in a home with a physically fenced yard, not an electronic fencing system.

Mack is fostering in northern Illinois. Because of his medical condition, applicants are welcome to come to meet him in his foster home. Mack's adoption fee is $325. That fee allows our rescue program to continue to assist Gordon Setters in need, especially dogs with special needs like Mack. Whoever that person or family is will be rewarded with the most loving Gordon imaginable.
