Meet CD

If you’ve spent much time around Setters you’ll already know the ideal circumstances for bringing a great new dog into the world: thoughtful breeder, happy healthy parents, quiet whelping, nursing with mom and siblings, engaging family around, then out to a loving new home at eight weeks or so. Well, many great dogs didn’t get that great a start in life, but grow into our faithful, run-into-a-burning-building-to-save-you companions as they learn what a steady guardian and a “furever” home can be.

“CD” (so named for the Roman numeral for “400”, as he is the 400th(!!!!) Setter rescued by SWESR) is a handsome, gentle and independent 4 year old Setter who may not have had such a great start in life. He was found as a totally worn-out boy in Memphis, and he’s new to people and loving human contact. Other dogs were competition in the world he came from, and he’s just getting used to friendly sibling dogs in his foster home. He is a cat-gentle boy who’s not hostile or aggressive, but who still needs to learn what a family can be to him. He’s not a fierce predator, and would not seem to have hunting in his future.

CD is comfortable and safe in his crate, and he’s still learning to be housebroken. The expectations of “home” are all new to him, and when he learns his commands they’ll be from your steady hand. Steady is important, as he still flinches at the sight of a raised hand. CD loves walks on a leash, and shows great promise as an eager walking partner. He’s not very social yet, but who can say? Many are the dogs whose “inner Setter” only comes out when they are finally around people that they can trust. If you are the right people for CD, you’ll likely never find a more faithful companion.

CD likes birds and outdoor creatures, but he doesn’t have “predator” much on his resume. He’s been fine with cats, and he could adopt into a home with cats. He digs just a bit (what Setter doesn’t?) but he’s not a chewer, and when you teach him “treats” they’ll be your joy and his.

CD is independent and is waiting to bond with the right person and family. He is a Setter, and with love and care you can bring him to joy and light. He sleeps calmly in his crate (and he’s fine with crate-time if everyone’s out), and house-privileges at night could be a new present for him. He has appreciated the furniture privileges he’s had so far, but he is respectful and you’ll want to invite him up if you want him to join you on the sofa. Foster care has surely been the happiest home he’s known so far, and with patience and guidance he will be your devoted dog.

CD is cautious as he adapts to new people and dogs. He needs love and companionship, and he’ll be happiest if he and his pack have a home where they enjoy a fenced yard and spaces to play in. He’s an active young boy, and an apartment might not be his best home. As a young boy he can’t wait to emerge to bring energy, joy and love to a family that he can call his own.

CD is in a foster home in Wellington, TX. He is healthy, neutered, and getting caught up on his vaccines. He is all Setter, and there truly is no greater joy than to watch him emerge, as days turn into weeks and months and you reach a time where a grown pup like CD can only remember the happy times in his furever home with you! Are you the family and dogs that can take teach young CD the joys and comforts of a furever home and pack?
