Meet BOONE/182 AB#17-182

Gender: Male
Age: 6-8 years
Weight: 47 pounds
Color: White and chestnut
Breed: English Setter Mix

Good with Children: Yes. Limited Exposure. We were able to introduce him to a 4 year old girl at a place we were visiting, and he let her pet him and took little notice of her.  He is fine around both men and women, not showing a preference.

Good with Dogs: Yes.  Multiple dog encounters, including our own rescue dog, and Boone again just doesn't pay much attention to them.   Basically ignores our dog, and when she occasionally tries to play with him, he still ignores her.  To our amazement, when an accidental encounter with our close friend’s super alpha female dog occurred, Boone became only the second dog who she did not make submit to her. So, good with dogs for sure.

Good with Cats: Yes.  More curious around cats than dogs, but not aggressive.  Would probably still chase a cat if it ran.

House trained: Yes.   He does his business every time we take him out. He goes throughout the night uncrated in our bedroom with absolutely no problem.  This includes the fact he doesn't wake us up to go in the morning.  He just lies quietly by our bed on a rug beside me until we are ready to get up.

Crate trained: Yes. He goes in with a treat without fussing.  He does bark or yelp for a few minutes as we are leaving, but quiets down and waits patiently for us to let him out when we return.

Leash trained: Reasonably so. He does better with a harness than a leash. He does keep a slight tension on the leash, but not so much that you have to keep pulling him back.

Activity Level: Has shown he likes to run when we have taken him to a dog park.  Generally calm in the house.  Doesn't play with toys or other dogs.   Has yet to lay on a doggie bed, preferring hardwood floor or throw rugs.  Does pay more attention when walked outside to the sounds and sights of other critters and birds.  Likes to be outside and take it all in, but he's a well behaved house dog.  Has learned to sit for treats, which he now likes.

Fence: Not Required, we do not have one.  We have property, so there are things to keep him interested when we are on leashed walks.  Does not seem to be a jumper, so a 4 foot fence should be sufficient.  If you can take him on decent length leashed walks, with occasional visits to dog parks, he should be fine.

Behavior: Boone is an alert, well behaved sweet dog,  From the way he was initially unsure about stairs, and gets up and looks at the TV when dogs bark, or certain other noises perk his curiosity, it doesn't seem he was previously a house dog.  But he is laid back in the house, but can get a bit anxious and whiney when I am gone and my husband is home, but this has improved over time. Boone likes human attention, and comes over when I pay attention to our dog, but only in a "me too", not aggressive way.  He often follows me around, but listens well when I go upstairs and tell him to stay downstairs.  He gets excited when I return home.  He is fast learner,  wants to please, and enjoys human attention.

Medical History: Up to date on shots, microchipped and neutered.  Picked up as a stray on December 16th, so no previous medical background information available.  Treated for worms , and an ear infection, but both have cleared up.  Healthy, good coat, perhaps still a little underweight. Alert and responsive.  Has worn down his front teeth.  Our guess is chewing wood, as he has twice gnawed on firewood and a stump table outside.  It's the only time he has chewed on anything.  Go figure.

Foster Comments: A loving low maintenance dog. He rides well in a car. He is very people oriented, and became bonded to me after only 2 days.  He is starting to bond more with my husband when I am away. He  doesn't pay much attention to other dogs, cats, or people.   He's fine with them, but is much more interested in me, and to a lesser extent, my husband.  He wants to please. Not a mean bone in his body.

He initially showed no interest in dog treats, or even food for that matter, but now eagerly anticipates his meals and treats He shouldn't be a problem around other pets , children or people.

But, while crate trained, Boone is too much of a people dog to take to regular extended crating, so we do not think he is a candidate where he will be crated 8 + hours a day 5 days a week.  He does not even attempt to get on furniture even though our dog is permitted on one chair.
We are both retired, and are willing to facilitate a “meet and greet “ for any interested parties in the Northern Virginia /DC area.

Above and Beyond English Setter Rescue is not a shelter, but a group of volunteers who are committed to finding excellent homes for the dogs in our program. All of our dogs are living in foster homes in states across the country. Often times a dog is not geographically close to where an adopter lives. When possible, transport assistance is provided at no cost to the adopter. Our transports are coordinated by dedicated volunteers and driven by selfless volunteers.
