Meet Duke

Duke is a 5 year old fawnequin Great Dane that came to the rescue as a severe neglect and abuse case out of Louisiana. He was starved, sick, and physically abused before coming to us.

Duke has been in the rescue for over a year now, and although we’ve gotten him through heartworm treatment and healthy, he still bears the mental scars of his past life. He always will.

Duke is an excellent house dog once he gets to know everyone. Housetrained, crate trained. He is currently living with several other danes and does well playing and just being a fun dog with them. But there are also a couple Danes in his foster’s house that he does not get along with, and he has to remain separated from.

It’s hard to know which dogs Duke will accept and which he will not tolerate. It’s not a male or female issue. Because of his unpredictable aggressive behavior with some dogs, Duke will never be a dog park or public outings dog.

Duke can also be unpredictable with humans too and, he can aggressively act out when around strangers. And it seems totally unprovoked at times... for instance: he will be fine with meeting three new people and then the fourth person he does not like, and will snap. There is no rhyme or reason to it that we can predict. And It’s the same with other dogs.

We believe it may stem from overstimulation and fear. We are seeking a behaviorist for duke to get this under control.

Duke will require a dane savvy adopter who provides strict boundaries and understands fear-based aggression and sees past his unique looks. He will not be adopted out to anyone with children. No exceptions. Again, we reiterate, Duke will never be a dog park or a public events dog. His looks attract attention too, people want to come meet him and pet him, and that’s setting Duke up to fail.

Duke will need to be crated or put in a bedroom or somewhere safe if you have guests to the house, due to his unpredictable and protective nature.

Duke will make an excellent companion for someone looking for a wonderful dog that never leaves the house. Once he trusts you, you’re golden. He’s a very loving dane with his humans. He just needs a very specific person and household to thrive. He would do best as an only dog. Because of his issues we’d like him to stay in the NWFL and/or coastal Alabama region, to be able to work with his adopter.

Dukes adoption fee is mostly sponsored at $100. To inquire about duke email nwflgdr@gmail.com.
