Meet Layla: Adopted!

Date of birth: 2/2015

9/11/2017: Layla is a cute brindle and white Pit Bull mix. She's 2 years old and weighs 45 lbs. Layla is very friendly and playful. She gets along great with other dogs. She enjoys playing in play groups with other dogs. Layla loves playing with squeaky toys and chewing on Nylabones. She keeps her kennel clean, and she's not a big barker. She enjoys going for walks and she rides nicely in the car.

Layla was in bad shape when she came to us as a stray. She was malnourished, dehydrated, and in labor, and sadly her puppies had died inside of her. We did emergency spay surgery to save her. Post-surgery, her red blood cells continued to be very low. After testing, blood transfusions, and exploratory surgery, we sent her to the vets at Mizzou and they diagnosed her with hyper fibrinolysis. This is a blood clotting disorder which causes her clots to break down too quickly. Layla was given some medicine and she's been fine ever since. This disorder doesn't cause any day to day concerns or require any daily meds, but if she had an injury or major surgery the veterinarian would need to give her medicine to help her blood clot appropriately. Small cuts and scrapes won't cause a problem, but wounds that bleed a lot or a surgery would call for the medicine.

None of this slows Layla down-- she's happy, loving and very playful! She's a super sweet girl and she will be a fun companion for someone. Layla has been vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. Our staff and veterinarians can explain hyper fibrinolysis in more detail.

MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...

Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for more information about our adoption process, our adoption fees and all that's included, and for a pet adoption application.

> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. We encourage you to fill out an online adoption application and submit it before you come to see us. This helps us process your application more quickly and we can schedule an appointment for you to come in so that our small staff can serve you best. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of the pets you meet, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the pet home with you that day. We’ll instead schedule a pick up date and time that’s convenient for you.

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.

Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
