Meet Cowboy

Meet Cowboy! He is a Staffordshire terrier, almost 9 months old, kennel trained, house trained and he is deaf. That does not stop him from being an almost regular dog. He plays, barks and does most things a regular dog does but he does communicate differently – he is learning hand signs, most a variation of American Sign Language. He is not ever going to be a guard dog or protector type dog but he will be an amazing friendly companion. He loves everyone – big and small. He loves attention, snuggling, giving kisses (especially on the toes) and just wants to enjoy life with his person. He gets along with other dogs though he is still learning play manners as he can’t hear when he gets too rough. He loves going to doggie day care once a week and playing with the other dogs. He loves splashing in their doggie pool. He is would probably be fine as an only dog as long has his person included him in the majority of life experiences (going to the store, out door eateries, hiking, traveling, etc) and didn’t leave him alone for extended periods of time as he is very social. He would do best in a home with another dog friend. He loves a good game of chase and if he can never catch his dog friend will quickly spin out all the puppy energy! Cowboy is very curious about cats and wants to play with them but when swatted on the nose he just walks away. He is pretty non-responsive to any actions like this from dogs as well. Cowboy is looking for a person that is interested in learning about his disability and what they can do to help make his life interesting and satisfying. A person that understands he needs an extra level of protection in that he can’t hear a dog coming after him, a car honking, or being called back should he get loose. He would love someone who will take time to learn how to communicate with him and teach him new things. He is very eager to please and while still having a great deal of puppy energy, he is just about perfect when properly exercised. His new family would be willing to continue kenneling when not at home and understand as a deaf dog he needs his safe place to prevent separation anxiety. They would understand that not being able to communicate can be frustrating and seek to communicate as he needs. His foster mom has some great resources and is willing to spend time with anyone interested in having Cowboy join their family and be a success. Cowboy’s adoption fee is $150 and that includes his puppy shots, rabies vaccine, neuter, microchip and he will come with a box of heartgard.
