Say Hello to Heidi! This rugrat weighs about 45lbs and probably won’t be more than 55lbs once she is full grown. She was born in the summer of 2016 and found with her mama and siblings living as strays. Now that Mama and siblings have all found their forever homes, Heidi is ready for hers! She’s a cute little hound mix and is learning to enjoy the simple things.

This precious girl is both housebroken and crate trained. Though she doesn’t signal when she needs to go out, she holds it until given the opportunity. The crate is her safe space so she willingly settles down in there. Even though she gets the run of the house at night, nine out of ten times she chooses to tuck herself into her crate. For daily naps, she prefers the couch and has this funny habit of snoozing off! Heidi hasn’t spent much time with cats, but she enjoys chasing squirrels so it may take some time for her to get used to a feline roommate. She has been around elementary aged children and did fine – Heidi can be a little timid, so having children old enough to understand to respect her space and let her come to them is important.

A home with a playful companion for Heidi is definitely ideal because that’s the key to her coming out of her shell. Don't already have a dog? Don't worry! She and Forest are the perfect duo and will happily get adopted together! Heidi absolutely LOVES other dogs and gets so excited to go to the dog park! Once she establishes a BFF, she’ll tackle and hug and give little puppy French kisses to them as her tail practically flies off in excitement! Upon first introductions, Heidi is a bit shy and prefers to approach on her own terms. It takes a minute for her to warm up to humans, but she does great when warming up to other dogs. Treats are a great way to get her to like you, but forcing your love upon her will surely result in failure. In general, any new situation will put Heidi on high alert, but thunderstorms and regular noises around the house don’t seem to bother her.

There’s a good level of energy that comes with Heidi and a trip to the dog park will drain that out. She can keep up with the big guys and would make a great playing partner for an energetic 4-legged buddy or a family who is very active and enjoys long hikes. She’s a pretty independent woman but checks in frequently with Foster Mom to make sure everything is safe. If she isn’t playing, she’s either sun bathing or chewing on a bone. And when Foster Mom comes home from work, Heidi gets super excited and shares her kisses and uses her paws to “hug” her doggy friends. And then more kisses!!!

In any new environment, Heidi is going to take some time to warm up. Once she is comfortable, she turns into the sweetest, happiest little puppy and it just makes your heart melt. She’s still getting used to meeting so many strangers but has come leaps and bounds from when she first came to ACR. If you’re looking for a second (or third, fourth, fifth..!) pup, Heidi is a gem. Once that connection is established, it’s stronger than any other bond.

To ensure our dogs are placed in a safe environment, we require a home visit for all adoptions. Because of this, we typically only adopt to homes within 30 minutes of Athens, GA. If you are further away than that and are interested in one of our pups, please still fill out an application and we can discuss your options. Please understand that you would be responsible for all transportation - meeting the dog, picking the dog up to start a trial, returning the dog should he/she not be a good fit, etc. Please visit our website for more info.
