Meet Roy
Roy is a young male, picked up from a cattle farm by animal control, he was emaciated, very ill, heartworm positive, but ridiculously friendly from the very beginning. When we picked him up from transport, his body condition was obvious, but then he started straining and had terrible diarrhea. It was determined he couldn't wait and went to the Emergency veterinarian. That is where we learned he had a horrible anal fistula case, completely decompensated bowels, urinary retention, and (by the way) he was heartworm positive and about 20 lbs underweight. He was already neutered, knew his commands, and was the sweetest thing in the world. Clearly a pet at some point, probably dumped for his health conditions. He is a veterinary staff favorite. So, one illness at a time. He has been on special medication for his anal fistula for months and it is resolving well. Had intense treatment to calm his bowels and reintroduce healthy digestion. He had to have a catheter to drain his bladder, but further exam showed no abnormalities (probably side effect of bowel issues), but he had crystals, so he is on Vitamin C to acidify his urine and the crystals are gone. He finally had his heartworm treatment after he gained enough weight to have some muscle and is doing very well. Last exam he has gained 18 lbs, microfilaria negative, should be able to transition to topical medication for his fistula maintenance soon, and urinating and pooping fine. Eats like a horse. He has special needs, but the hard parts are done. He is the most special soul you have ever met, it seems when we get these hard luck health cases, they are the best temperament dogs and everyone loves him. Now he needs someone special to love him forever and not toss him in the trash, just because he needs a little health maintenance.
