Shea - URGENT!! Australian Kelpie Mix Harvey , LA

Sometimes your heart just breaks for a dog, especially a truly good one without any serious issues, who just can't catch a break... That dog is Shea. Shea is only about a one and a half to two years old and she is an Australian Kelpie mix, not common to the US. In that short time, she has been in at least five different homes through no real fault of her own. Shea was found on the street when she was just a young puppy by one of our volunteers. After waiting a few days and posting signs, no one came to claim her. She spent some time in the shelter and landed herself in a great foster home. She was adopted and returned for the simple reason that she was a puppy and wasn't housetrained. She went back to her original foster home and was subsequently adopted again. This time the adoption fell through because after months in a home they claimed she didn't bond with the husband. She was placed in a different foster home who can no longer keep her because his landlord has threatened to fine him and now she is back at the shelter.

We don't know how her original owner misplaced her but it is definitely their loss. She's been shuffled in and out of homes for her entire young life and really deserves one home that will love her for life. The fact that she has to be bounced to a sixth home makes our foster coordinator want to cry.

Despite all of this, Shea has remained a good dog who just needs someone to finally give her the stability she needs. She'd prefer a home with another playful dog and an active owner. Runners are a plus!! She weighs 50 pounds and will need a cat free home.

Here is some information we've received from those who have spent some time with her:

"Shea will need a decent back yard and is not an considered to be an apartment dog. She also needs an owner that is active; a long distance jogger is perfect as she can really run without stopping. She will make a great second dog. Shea was great with my 7year old dog similar in size to her. She is mostly silent throughout her playing. She will not bother neighbors w/ barking and does not even bark that much at the park either. She is playful, quick, smart, yet she is remarkably calm when not playing and does not act out. My older dog became a much more playful, active dog. She was getting the exercise a mature dog needed. Shea is great on a leash and walked in tandem with my dog. They were great during Barkus and while in the Quarter. She is a magnet for meeting people. She will improve any owner's social life. That is a guarantee."

"She's a total love bug, young, energetic, and fun-loving. She loves to follow you around the house while you do day-to-day things and she also loves to snuggle on the couch. She gets along great with my German Shepherd. She has been good with kids, including a two year old."

"She gets along great with my two kids, ages 12 and 8. She gets along with other dogs, barks at first, but just wants to play. Has not been around cats. She has been through first round of training classes at SPCA, knows sit, down, relax."

The Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter adoption fee is $67. The adoption fee includes vaccinations, mandatory spay/neuter, heartworm test, and microchip.
