Our special and spunky girl Kenzie has had quite the journey since we originally rescued her in 2015, but she’s now more than ready to find her forever home! Through it all, she has stayed her wonderful and sassy self and she is one of our all time favorites in the rescue! For those of you who have been keeping track of our girl, she had some crazy medical stuff this year but has bounced back like a champ and is ready to find her people! More details on her medical information is toward the end of this bio.

Kenzie is the definition of a “pocket pit bull” weighing in at a little under 40 pounds and we estimate she was born in September 2013.

Kenzie just loves her people! She would prefer to be cuddled up and snuggled all day long. She is the master of the “blanket burrito” and seems to love being swaddled in a blanket during the winter and summer. We have actually been impressed at her burrito making skills and, at times, have had to really look to find her because she will have completely covered herself up.

Kenzie gets along very well with the other dogs in her foster home, but can definitely be a little bossy! She prefers a laid back and easygoing friend, if another dog is in the home and they are able to be properly introduced. She has developed some reactivity to other dogs on walks and in public, which her foster is working on with her and this work will need to be continued.
.
Kenzie is low to medium energy. Due to her back leg and spine issues (more on that below), she’s not a dog who can go on long walks or hikes, but she enjoys short strolls around the neighborhood or running around in the backyard like a goofball for a few minutes, then coming back inside to curl up under her blanket and cuddle with you. She has a particular fondness for garden hoses, and watching her go nuts over the spray is hilarious!

As you might have gotten some sense, Kenzie has a bit of a Diva streak. Because of this, her ideal home will provide consistent, clear boundaries and structure. Kenzie is a smart little munchkin and will try to test some boundaries if allowed. She responds best to a firm, calm and confident handler and when she has all of these things, she is a delightful nugget!

Kenzie would be best in a home without cats or little kids. She is crate and house trained and, while she doesn’t need a yard to run around in, she would not best in an apartment given her vocal nature and reactivity.

When we say Kenzie is one of our favorites, we aren’t kidding. No matter what Kenzie has had to go through, we have been right there with her! We are looking for a home who will love her as much as we do and will respect her tiny, but mighty self.

Kenzie is spayed, up to date with vaccinations, and microchipped, and her adoption fee is $350.

Kenzie’s history and medical information:
Kenzie initially came to Forgotten Dogs in March of 2015 when she was very pregnant (she was originally Romey and mom of the "R Litter") and our tiny girl had a litter of 11 puppies. Kenzie and her puppies were adopted out but, unfortunately she turned out not to be a good fit for her adopter, so she came back to the rescue in 2016. Kenzie has had a bit of a tough time finding the perfect home, so she has been one of our longer term dogs.

In the summer of 2018 we noticed she was having some discomfort and it turned out her luxating patella, which she has had for a while, had started to cause her pain, so she was placed on medical hold until she was all fixed up. She has had two surgeries to repair a severe luxating patella in her left hind leg (in August and November), and after she healed from those, her leg is MUCH more stable and she feels so much better! Even though she is all healed up, she will always have a bowed out gait when she walks due to her abnormal physical conformation.

Kenzie was finally ready to start looking for her forever home again in January of 2019, but she was only available for a short time when, in April, she was hit with a medical emergency. Her foster mom woke up one morning to find Kenzie completely paralyzed in her hind end. We rushed her to WSU Veterinary Hospital, where an MRI revealed a herniated disc, and she had emergency surgery to relieve the pressure. After over a week at the hospital, she returned to her foster home to continue her recovery. We are ecstatic to say that Kenzie has regained full function in her back end, although she will always walk with a bit of a “sway”, and her balance isn’t the best. She sometimes needs a bit of help getting up on the couch (her favorite place!), and lots of stairs are a bit difficult for her. But Kenzie is able to walk and run around just fine and her lack of coordination doesn’t dampen her spirits at all. She’s still the spunky, sassy, and incredibly sweet girl we know and love!

Due to Kenzie’s medical issues, it is important that Kenzie is kept at a healthy weight. She takes glucosamine and carprofen (NSAID) daily.
