Meet Jeannie

Jeannie has been our foster dog and is ready for just the right person or family to give her a forever home. Her breed mix is called a Texas Heeler, and her vet says she's mostly Blue Heeler AKA Australian Cattle Dog. Jeannie is the smartest dog I've ever trained and learned Sit, Shake, Lay Down, Roll Over in less than a day! I use voice and hand motions combined. Use treats to train at first and then simply tell her she's a good dog! If you have ever seen the Youtube videos of the dog Skidboot, Jeannie has all that potential. She is loving and sweet but can become fearful unless one uses positive reinforcement and bonds with her. She has suffered some abuse in her past. She is 100 percent loving towards my husband and I. She has lived with us several months. Jeannie loves to jump up for a hug and would thrive with an owner that is familiar with Australian Cattle Dogs as her personality is definitely Heeler. She is an active, playful doggy and she's definitely enjoying becoming a house pet.
We crate her at night and when we are not home. She likes sleeping on a piece of blanket in her crate but will gnaw a little on it too so cut off any cloth hems. Putting a leash on her ( I use a slip leash for that as its easy) and/or using a milkbone will have her easily go into her crate. Jeannie rarely forgets what is a toy and what isn't but will need supervision at first as she learns your house rules. She is easily corrected with a firm No or Down and a redirect. She walks well on a leash, is crate trained and dog door trained. She loves her food and snacks but needs a measured amount of dry food as she will over eat. Jeannie eats 2 cups daily of grain free dry dog food because of prior allergies and loves a daily milk bone ( I get ones about 3 inches long for her, Old Roy Peanut Butter or Meat Basted are favorite flavors). I have experimented with tiny amounts of human foods and she likes a small piece of bread or cookie but tomato products don't agree with her. She has a bit of separation anxiety when we leave her for a few hours ( she is very excited at our return as if we had been gone for a year!) so she would be happiest in a home where people are often at home. Because of her breeds alpha dominate personality and high energy levels I would not recommend her for a home with young children. We have no livestock so I don't know what herding abilities she has but she is not good with free range chickens as she will hunt or play with them. Unsure how she would be with cats but she has been near mine while on a leash. She is a good watch dog. She will bark in her crate when she needs to go out or is happy that you are home. When outside ( we have a fenced in area) she will jump up on our patio door when she wants back inside. She gets along with other dogs and is a pack leader type ( classic Heeler ). If you have other dogs then feed separately or she will attempt to take their food. She adores stuffed squeaky toys and rope toys. She has a Kong or a Nylabone in her crate to keep her teeth white and clean. She retrieves and generally drops what she brings back when I say Drop. She takes treats gently. Jeannie is spayed and has her shots. This is your opportunity to own this fabulous and attractive sweetheart. Contact the shelter to schedule a time to meet her.
