Meet Charlie: Adopted!

CHARLIE IS IN FOSTER HOME

Date of birth: 1/2009

10/1/2015: Charlie is a sweet little Beagle mix. He's about 6 years old. He was brought to us by a neighbor after his family moved away and just left Charlie behind in the yard. The poor guy wasn't very socialized and was very stressed. Luckily we were able to find a wonderful foster home for Charlie and he's made amazing progress!

Charlie is house trained and crate trained. He lives with other dogs in his foster home. He initially didn’t really know how to play, but now he LOVES to play with other dogs and truly enjoys having other dogs for companionship. If you have a dog we'd ask you to make an appointment to bring your dog in to meet Charlie to make sure they like each other.

Charlie loves to go for walks and for car rides. He knows some obedience commands and sits nicely. He’s bright and a fast learner. He’s not a big barker— which is unusual for a Beagle mix! He enjoys relaxing out in the backyard, and stalking and chasing those pesky squirrels that invade his yard. A funny quirk of his— on occasion he’s taken his toys, or someone’s socks if he’s lucky to find them, and will bury them under leaves or in the mulch in the corners of the yard! He’s not a digger however.

A couple of things the foster parents are still working on with Charlie’s socialization include that he’s not always good on a leash with other dogs. They’ve been working on “leave it” and he’s doing much better but still needs some work. His socialization with people has come a long way since we first took Charlie in. He’s much more comfortable with people he doesn’t know coming in the house now and not the super timid guy he used to be in that situation. There will be an adjustment time in his new home most likely, but he’s been doing really well meeting new people now. He has not been around children very much and though he’s shown no aggression towards them he may do best in a home without kids. He'd be a better match for someone who has some dog experience rather than for a first time dog guardian.

Charlie weighs 46 lbs and he's been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. If you're interested in adopting him, please submit an online adoption form and if he seems like a good match for you we'll set up a convenient time for you to meet him. His foster parents can also tell you more about him. This little guy is doing so well now after being abandoned, and thanks to our foster homes he’s become a happy dog and good little companion.

MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...

Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for more information about our adoption process, our adoption fees and all that's included, and for a pet adoption application.

> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!

> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.

> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of our dogs, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the dog home with you that same day.

Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
