Meet Sam
Sam at a glance:
Intelligent, well-behaved, loyal, affectionate, loves people. Is dog-friendly, but should be an only pet. Excellent on- and off-leash, rides well in cars/truck beds, calm/medium energy, goofy, friendly with strangers, knows tricks, no prey drive, no food aggression, not destructive, and happy all the time.
Sam has a real need for people and affection. His ideal owner would be someone as sweet as he is. He loves to go new places and meet new people. He loves to be the center of attention and is all smiles all the time. He wants nothing more than to sleep in your bed with you and be your best friend.
He came to us as a stray - underweight and missing his owner dearly. He took to our volunteers right away. He is SUCH A LOVER; he wins the heart of everyone he meets. He loves to cuddle! He is an absolute pleasure to be around. He is very willing to please, will do anything for a treat, and is a fast learner. He knows sit, lie down, stay, shake, high-five, he stands on his hind legs, comes when called, will let you put anything on his head for a photo opportunity, catches treats in the air, the list goes on.
He is medium energy - he only needs a good walk and he's happy. He walks perfectly on a leash, and is also great off-leash. Never runs away or chases prey.
He needs to go to a low-key home. While he is not scared of much, he gets overwhelmed easily. He is not your typical rough-and-tumbler / play buddy. If there are children in the house, they need to be mature enough to be good pack leaders.
We recommend an experienced dog owner or someone at least willing to learn about dog training. When he first came to us, he had anxiety issues-- but now he is a wonderful boy with few issues. The only remaining problem is that he doesn't like to be cooped up with another dog, which is why he should be an only dog. He has a rough history, but we have learned that patience and daily walks were all it took to turn him into the best boy ever.
He can obsess over toys, so he probably would not be good in a home where children's toys are always lying around. We recommend that he lives life without toys. He has been without toys for many months at the shelter and it has produced amazing results. When he does get his jaws on a toy, his anxiety goes up. We believe this was a coping mechanism in his past.
- Friendly with other dogs, even little dogs - but should be an only dog
- Friendly with people / strangers
- Not tested with cats
- 10 years old, but you'd never know it
- Medium energy level
- Not destructive
- No food aggression
- Rides well inside cars and in truck beds
Neutered, all vaccinations, de-wormed & heartworm checked, asking $150 donation.
