Meet Dougle

description by the foster: After living with me for the past two months this is what I know:
Dougle is a loving pet. He enjoys all that life in a home offers. He especially loves a walk in the park with me and my own three dogs (2 – 70# Golden Hounds, and a 16# Corgi mix). Dougle is happy to ride in the car and find his place among the limited seating. He’s good on leash, easy to manage and does an easy pace. He will offer a tentative growl at approaching dogs if he thinks they aren’t as well behaved as they should be; but has no desire to pursue the matter further (meaning he doesn’t chase or attempt to engage in a fight).
I’m also fostering an 8 week old bouncing baby boy pup that torments Dougle constantly - romping over him or biting at his ears. Dougle will tolerate his play for awhile then sends puppy-boy packing. Sometime later I’ll find them curled up together on one of the large dog beds for the night. What a good boy Dougle is!
His poor excuse for an owner was evidently more concerned about being chastised for the deplorable condition of his dog than seeking help for Dougle’s hairless condition. Yes, that’s a bit of ire and disgust for such folks!
The good news is that Dougle is beautiful now, all the hair has grown in and he’s a happy pup – enjoying life and the company of friends. Dougle does take a small thyroid pill twice a day for his hypothyroid condition and will (most likely) for the rest of his life – cost is minimal. Other than that he’s “good as gold” and simply needs a restful environment to enhance his golden years – the vet says he is most likely 6-7 years old.
For these and a great many other reasons, I love an old dog! I’ve found shelter dogs especially grateful for every kindness, every morsel of food, and every touch that says “you’re home now”. They deserve our best effort to make their remaining years atonement for their past sorrows.
