Meet Rio: Adopted!
Date of birth: 3/2012
6/5/2014: Rio is a big, handsome Yellow Lab mix with an expressive face. He is 2 years old and weighs 84 lbs. He is house trained, but may need a little refresher course in his new home. He was given up because someone in his family was allergic to him.
Rio is a fun guy and loves to go for walks. He walks pretty nicely on a leash without pulling too much. He also fetches. Rio is very friendly and loving with people he knows and with most strangers, but we’ve discovered that occasionally he can be startled when a stranger goes to pet him. Leaving his home was pretty stressful for Rio, so some of that behavior may just be from the stress and anxiety of being in a shelter environment. Obedience classes and more socialization would be very beneficial for Rio, and his new person will just need to be aware and cautious around new people. Once he’s in a home and comfortable, he may relax more and not have that reaction to some strangers. We’ve not seen him react negatively to children, but we are hesitant to place him in a home with young kids.
Rio is choosy about his doggie friends, so if you have a dog we’d ask you to make an appointment for the dogs to meet so that we can determine if they’d get along together.
Rio has been neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and tested for heartworms. He’s a sweetheart!
MORE ON ADOPTING OUR DOGS...
Please visit our web site at HSGKC.ORG for more information about our adoption process, our adoption fees and all that's included, and for a pet adoption application.
> Our goal is to send you home with a healthy pet and any information and support you may need to help your new pet adjust to his or her new home. All of our dogs & puppies have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, dewormed, treated for fleas & ticks, tested for heartworms (7 mo. and over), and are on monthly heartworm preventative. Puppies who are too young to receive all the necessary puppy boosters and/or first rabies shot may be brought back to us for those vaccines at no extra charge. You will also receive a leash, collar, coupons for pet supplies and services, toys, and educational materials. And we'll give your dog a bath before he or she goes home!
> Please note that we prefer and may require a fenced yard for many of our dogs. Exceptions are made on an individual basis depending on the dog's needs, the person's dog experience, the dog's and person's activity levels, home environment and other factors.
> An application is required to adopt a pet and applicants must meet our adoption requirements. If you decide you'd like to adopt one of our dogs, we reserve the pet for you but we generally don't send the dog home with you that same day.
Thank you for searching for a shelter pet!
