Meet Jeter - ADOPTED

Jeter is a Shiba Inu Mix from the country of Taiwan; he is about 9 years old and currently weighs 43 pounds (as of 11-26-2016).

Jeter was dumped by his owner at a high kill government-run animal shelter in Taiwan where all abandoned pets have only 12 days to live. Luckily, Jeter was rescued the day before being put down.

Completed medical information:

After receiving several medical tests, Jeter turned to be a healthy dog with only one medical issue: he was found to have a very mild periodontal disease in last November during receiving a teeth cleaned, but neither any of his teeth was removed nor he needed to receive any special oral treatment. Under his veterinarian's instruction, Jeter has been given a couple of kibbles of prescription T/D after every meal as teeth cleaning; and it seems to work for Jeter. His periodontal disease is under controlled and hasn't progressed since then.

Jeter is negative on distemper disease, and has passed all our other required medical exams that include 4 Idexx (Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma Phagocytophilum) and CBC blood work. He has also passed a DNA test for six different diseases that are transmitted by fleas or ticks.

Jeter is neutered, de-wormed, up to date on all vaccinations including rabies shot. He is heartworm negative and on preventative, and is micro chipped.

Since Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is often seen in many large breeds, Jeter was given radiographic check on his hip joints and it shows that his both hips are normal; he does not have hip dysplasia.

All those medical documents including an X-ray film on Jeter's hips will be given to his adopter when he is adopted.

Jeter's temperaments and personality:

Jeter gets along well with people and dogs of all sizes. He is always good with small dogs but was a little nervous in front of the dogs that are much bigger than him at first; we think he probably had bad experiences being with big dogs previously. When the rescuer took Jeter out for walks at beginning, Jeter would stop moving if he saw any big dogs walking closer to him on street. But after being brought out often to meet with many different dogs, Jeter now is more confident on himself and starts to enjoy playing with big dogs even though they meet for the first time.

Jeter is calm and has a mellow temperament. He is a little bit shy with strangers; he would friendly approach the stranger and sniff the person a little bit and then let the stranger pet him. Jeter is also a little shy in a new environment but warms up quickly if his new parents can give him a little bit time and patience, and also know how to encourage him with treats. Jeter has just completed a basic training course on 7/18/2014.

Jeter loves food and it is very easy to train him with food. He has an excellent sense of smell. His rescuer said Jeter is able to smell food from miles away. Every time 2-3 minutes after Jeter starts to sniff in the air while they are walking on the street, the rescuer always sees people either carry food from distance or ride scooter with food.

Jeter is an intelligent dog and a quick learner that learns things without being told twice. His rescuer said Jeter is very well-behaved and obedient to the rules; he is also good at reading people's facial cues. For example, Jeter does not like to have his teeth checked so he tries to hide himself whenever his rescuer has the tooth brush. The rescuer said she would pretend to be upset but never raised her voice; Jeter sensed that she was unhappy and would stop running and come obey to her rule.

The rescuer describes Jeter is an affectionate, friendly, sweet and passionate dog after you know him. He enjoys being with people and is a people-oriented dog, but he is not the type of dog that is eager for attention all the time and always quietly stays at her side or sleeps by her feet to wait for her while she was working on the computer. Whenever she calls Jeter who always happily comes near her with a wagging tail; he is very loyal and loving to the people whom he loves.

Jeter is neither food nor toy aggressive or possessive towards both people and dogs. He likes children and is gently to them; he does not jump on the children but would stay quietly with them. He doesn't seem to be bothered by noises made by the children, but we think he will do best with older children who have experience with dogs.

Jeter is a quite laid-back dog that does not show much interest in doing heavy outdoor activities; 2-3 times daily walks should be enough exercise for him. He likes to go hiking; his rescuer often takes him hiking when the weather is nice. Jeter will be a great companion for low-moderate active family with or without children, and he will also fit in very well with one-dog family.

Jeter likes car rides and is very behaved in the car. His rescuer does not have her own vehicle but often takes taxi with Jeter when they are out. She said every time after she gets in the taxi, Jeter immediately follows her in. He always quietly looks out of the window and enjoys the view; sometimes he puts his head on the rescuer's lap and falls asleep in the car.

Jeter is housebroken and walks very well on the leash. He is fine with cats and does not chase them when he sees them but he never lives with cats.

Where is Jeter right now?

Jeter is still living in Taiwan and will be scheduled to come to the United States once we find a loving home for him. He will be staying with our foster family in North Wilmington, Delaware after his arrival. If you are seriously thinking of giving Jeter a loving permanent home, please contact us to ask for an adoption application. Because we do not have a shelter to show people our dogs and all of our rescues are living with our foster family, we do not accept drop-by visits if you are interested in seeing our dogs. Before meeting our dog, the prospective adopter needs to fill out the application and being approved.
