Meet Duke Pawsome (polydactyl)

---
Duke is an absolutely exquisite black polydactyl (he has 23 toes). He is also one of those magic black cats described by Barbara Holland in her book, Secrets of the Cat. She writes: The magic blacks are all changelings in the cradles of commoners. They come from the shelters; they come in off the streets, ripping furiously at the back door and shouting for admission; they are born among ordinary kittens....They stand out in a litter....They seem to mature early. The expression on their faces is extraordinary. They stare into your eyes with peculiar intensity, as if recognizing you in some more penetrating way than you have ever been recognized before.....With the right person they develop an exclusive, passionately possessive relationship, not always demonstrative but unmistakable. Holland also writes that it is criminal to give them away. I think she's right, but I feel I have no choice, as Duke is highly reactive to the other male cats in my household. For everyone's safety, he must be confined to a back room to prevent fights and subsequent injuries. He deserves much more. He gets along fine with female cats, but cannot go to a home with other males. He is very shy and will need someone with patience and dedication to earn his trust. Once that is achieved, he will be a loving, devoted, companion and undoubtedly the most magnificent cat you have ever encountered. It breaks my heart to give him up, but I feel I must do so for his sake. I am interested in only those individuals who are serious about adoption and who have sufficient knowledge of cats to offer him a safe and secure permanent home.

All foster pets have seen a vet. Cats and kittens all live in foster homes and are litter-box trained and socialized with cats and people and sometimes with dogs. Each adoption fee includes up-to-date vaccinations, microchip ID implant, free rabies shot, and free mandatory spay/neuter. Come meet our adoptable pets during our adoption events each Saturday and Sunday afternoon at Lubbock Petsmart stores. Times and map on www.HumaneSocietyofWestTexas.org. Not every pet comes to every adoption event, so make sure and call or email if you want to meet a specific pet. Many pets are not listed on Petfinder.com.
