Meet Sugar

Meet SUGAR, a 10-month-old Poodle/Jack Russell Terrier mix! She has had one owner since she was born in early February and was surrendered by the loving owner when she could no longer afford to care for her.

SUGAR weighed 11.8 pounds the first of December and the foster is attempting to put a little weight on her. However, she’s small built and will likely be no larger than 15-16 pounds. She has a pretty wiry coat that looks like the combination of her two breeds. If brushed regularly and cared for at home routinely, she should have to be professionally groomed only occasionally.

As you would expect from her breed mix, she is a smart and busy girl. She has learned to play by herself and with the other dogs in her foster home. She will chew on Nyla bones, play “run around the room” with the other tiny dog in the foster home, run at top speed with larger dogs and loves her twine ball. She hasn’t chewed on anything inappropriate and we don’t think she would as long as she has plenty of toys and entertainment.

SUGAR is not a cuddler, but she does come and get in your lap for a little kiss or two and then she jumps down and either plays or lies at your feet.

She likes to sleep in the bed and likes to lie right beside you when she does. She sleeps well when she realizes that is what you want her to do and doesn’t bother you to go outside or play. She is hesitant to be picked up, so she wouldn’t be a good choice for a family with small children. She wouldn’t immediately growl or snap at them, but she gets stiff and is quite uncomfortable.

SUGAR has been fine with all the people she has met and fine with other dogs of any size. She likes the outdoors, but prefers that you are out with her otherwise she wants back in soon after she’s let out.

SUGAR seems to prefer her dry kibble moistened and loves milk bone treats.

SUGAR is an alert barker. When someone or something new is around the house, she’ll let you know. She sometimes barks when she’s playing with the other dogs or when she gets excited when you come home. She has to have a reason to bark and her bark is loud but not high-pitched and annoying.

SUGAR is crate trained. She even looks to see if her kennel door is open to go in late at night if she is ready to go to bed before her people.

She is not 100% house-trained but is making great progress.

If you have an active home where SUGAR can get the exercise and attention she enjoys and needs, please review the information below and submit your application. The adoption donation is $175 which includes her spay, negative heart worm test, flea and tick prevention, heart worm prevention, deworming, and up to date vaccinations.

Dog Adoption Guidelines:

You must fill out an application to be considered for adoption. You can fill out an application at www.forthepets.org/adoption.htm or email to humanesociety@murray-ky.net for an application.
It is not a "first come" process; we try to "match" the dog with the family for a FOREVER home. We process all applications at once and take the dog off the site, place on adoption pending status until a decision is made. If a suitable home is not found, the dog returns to active status.
The dog adoption process can take about two weeks; we are a small group of volunteers who have full time jobs.
All of our dogs are indoor dogs with outdoor privileges, unless otherwise specified.
We do not fly or ship our dogs due to heat/cold concerns and safety issues. If you are willing to fly out AND fly the dog back in the cabin (size restrictions) with you, that would be considered.
If you apply to adopt a dog and are chosen, you must come to Murray, KY to pick up the dog and fill out the paperwork in person.
We do adopt out-of-state, but we do not transport.
We can't provide individual "meet and greet" sessions for each applicant. If chosen to adopt, you will have time to visit with the dog before signing any paperwork and will not be committed to adopt if you choose not to at that time.
