Meet Nick

Meet Nick, our large and in charge newest addition! This 3 year old, Harlequin, male Great Dane was the victim of divorce, moving, and his owner working too long of hours, requiring him to be crated up to 12 hours/day. Unfortunately, this big lug needs a lot more exercise, attention, and training than they could provide so he is now here with us at Big Dogs. Nick is the absolute sweetest dog to his people and will make an incredibly loyal companion, but he does not like strangers, men or women, coming into his house and it takes him a while to warm up. He responds very well to a strong leader and with proper environmental management and introductions, he does great, but he is not the dog for a busy household with lots of new people coming and going. As far as his immediate family goes, this boy is a typical velcro Dane who loves to snuggle in bed if allowed. Nick is house trained, crate trained, knows sit, shake, lay down, stay, no and off and walks great on leash as long as he has his Gentle Leader on! He does take his job pretty seriously in regards to protecting his territory and will bark at the front door and fence to fend off intruders, so a 6 foot privacy fence is a must for his new home, especially due to his incredible hops! He needs a very behavioral savvy adopter with no children, but he will listen to your every word once you earn his trust as his leader and is a complete love bug. Nick adores other dogs of all sizes and even does well at the dog park, submissive to most other dogs. He does have an old ACL injury in his right knee which has resulted in some arthritis, but he is not a surgical candidate and all he needs is 100 mgs of Tramadol twice daily, a monthly Adequan shot, and a joint supplement to keep him spry and pain free. He can run and play with the best of them and has a lot of energy for his age so he would love an active family.
