LOCATED IN LIMA, OHIO
MEET BERNIE! -Red, red, RED! ..If you haven't guessed by now, Mr. Bernie is  a gorgeous, 2-3 year old, red, F1 Labradoodle pup who is ready for his new "furever" home and family. He is currently 43 lbs. and once we put some much needed weight on him, he will be between 55-60 lbs. He has a to die for, rusty red, wiry, light shedding coat that will require brushing and some grooming.
Bernie was rescued from a rural kill shelter in Ohio where he had been dumped by his previous owners for "reasons unknown." We were told he is a Labradoodle. But we suspect he may be an Irish Setter / Poodle mix because of his rich red coloring. Whatever doodle mix he may be, we know for certain that he is one amazing pup with an exceptional temperament and a ton of charm and personality. He's completely won over his foster momma who tells us Bernie is "a keeper."
"Bernie is a great dog. If I didn't already have 3, I would keep him myself because he is that special.  He is so sweet, and very smart and gentle. He is also attentive when it comes to his humans and willing to please.  I am amazed that he is as good as he is considering all he's been through. While we know no that he is 2-3 years old, he is still very puppy-like in may ways. He's inquisitive, playful, and everything he does and sees is utterly fascinating to him. He is very active and is a high energy dog who needs daily exercise. He also seems to have a high prey drive for squirrels and rabbits. But he does settle down so beautifully. Especially in the evenings as long as he gets his exercise."
"Bernie is quite the athlete! He would literally be an agility star given the opportunity. He can be what I call, "busy, busy busy" if not given proper exercise and stimulation meaning, he could potentially get himself into mischief if not appropriately directed or engaged. He's smart! And because of this requires a bit more in those areas than other dogs. Sometimes when we describe the smart, high energy dogs we use the phrase: "He needs a job." which is a pretty good assessment of Bernie."
"Bernie is a highly human focused dog. He really loves his people. Snuggling happens to be  one of his favorite activities and he is a very loving and affectionate dog. He likes to play with other dogs but in his home seems to want to be in charge. He is getting along with my pack for the most part but now that he is comfortable, is becoming pushy and tries to challenge my male. I think he would be happiest as an only dog. Cats are an absolute "no-no" for this guy because he has a high prey drive and he tends to want to chase them. He needs some work with his leash manners and basic commands and would definitely benefit from a training class or two."
"The ideal home for Bernie would be with an active, dog savvy, adult family who are home for at least part of the day. He will also need a large yard that is surrounded by a physical fence of at least 5' in height. He is completely house trained, but could use some additional practice with his leash manners which we are working on. He is just beautiful and is a very good boy! He's going to be a perfect companion for the right family."
Bernie is neutered, UTD on all vaccinations and preventatives and is completely house trained.  He will be a wonderful addition to the right family.
