Coonhound Charlie Treeing Walker Coonhound Rockaway, NJ

Coonhound Charlie is a 6 year old 80 pound GORGEOUS saddle-backed purebred Treeing Walker Coonhound straight from the trails of North Georgia. He has wonderful conformation with a gorgeous coat and those signature "cat-paw" feet.  He was picked up as a stray and brought to a Georgia animal control facility, where he sat for a week, before being put on a list of dogs that would be euthanized after 10am on July 4th if no one came to get him out of there.  His current foster mom couldn't stand the thought of seeing him be put down, and began working hard to try and find a temporary solution for him so that he would not have to be killed. He is staying right now in an outdoor kennel, which was the best anyone could do, but when he is placed in a home it is with the understanding that he will be housed indoors.

Charlie is a very sweet, gentle boy and seems to get along with people of all sizes, and other dogs, but it is clear to his foster mom that he has been trained to tree raccoons and other small furry critters so he will not be safe around cats and small wildlife. He also takes way too much interest in birds, so should not be placed in a home with birds. When he catches a scent of a varmint, he takes off after it, trees it, puts his paws up on the tree and bays to let you know he has cornered the little rascal...which after all, is his job.  However, because of this, he has to be with someone who is strong enough to handle him on leash if the time should arise that he sees or smells a furry critter off in the distance.  Otherwise, he walks very well on leash (with a training collar) and would be a good walking buddy for an adult who has the time and interest in going for long walks.  He seems to want to hold it for as long as he can while he is in the kennel, so housebreaking may not be that difficult. He would also benefit from a securely fenced yard for supervised off leash playing time.

Charlie will be neutered, vaccinated and heart worm tested prior to placement in his forever home.  Previous hound experience is a plus.  Charlie is an absolutely WONDERFUL, gentle soul and would make a great companion for someone who loves a good hound dog.
