Coal is a four and a half year old Cattle Dog mix.  Australian Cattle Dogs have a high level of energy, a quick intelligence, and an independent streak that make them a fun challenge. Coal will need to attend a series of dog obedience classes or a come when called class to help establish a better recall.  These classes are a great experience for both of you and would help you to communicate effectively with Coal and build a bond for a lifetime.  Most of the local dog trainers offer discounts for dogs who have been adopted from the shelter.  This breed typically responds well to structured training, but Coal will not hesitate to keep you on your toes so to hold his attention you will need to make sure that training is fun and challenging for him.  He has been neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations.  This breed is known for their herding ability and because of this Coal will need a home without children.    UPDATE: Coal had a play date today with Jedd the Plott Hound.  They did very well together and explored and sniffed.  A dog that doesn't mind being herded or ignores that behavior would be ideal if your household already has another dog.  Schedule a meet and greet with the staff to see if he is the right fit for you.
