Meet Smoky

HISTORY: SMOKY's story is a sad one--his owners discovered he had Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) in the fall of 2012 during a routine blood test.  However, as is typical with many FIV+ cats he has no symptoms, is in excellent health and expected to live a normal lifespan (in fact, SMOKY is asymptomatic--his blood work is completely normal and he shows no sign of illness, only a positive test for FIV).  Later, SMOKY's owners boarded them and their other cats at the vet while they were away, then simply decided they didn't want SMOKY back and abandoned him at the vet's office.  He was scheduled to be put down until a rescue volunteer stepped in at the last moment and took him home to save his life.
While conventional thinking is to only place an FIV+ cat in a home with no other cats or with another FIV+ cat, there are many “mixed households”.  According to Cornell University, the primary mode of FIV transmission is through repeated fights resulting in the exchange of blood. On rare occasions infection is transmitted from an infected mother cat to her kittens, usually during passage through the birth canal or when the newborn kittens ingest infected milk. Sexual contact is not a major means of spreading FIV, and it poses no threat to humans or other species.   If you would like to consider SMOKY for adoption but need more information on FIV, please feel free to e-mail askfelinesandfriends@yahoo.com so we can provide you with links to educational websites.
TEMPERAMENT: SMOKY is very friendly and outgoing; he loves to come up to you and bump his head against you to let you know it's time to be petted.  He's a big ol' box of purrs and loving.  SMOKY's not big on being picked up, but will definitely come and sit in an available lap, on his schedule of course.  He should get along fine with other cats, as he came from a home with two others.  SMOKY is a handsome Russian Blue mix boy with a short gray coat and a notch in his left ear.
