LOCATED IN WINDSOR, CONNECTICUT - MEET SOPHIE! a beautiful 18 month old, Australian Labradoodle girl ready for her new "furever" home and family. She is 38 lbs. and she has a soft, mixed wool/fleece coat that will require grooming. Sophie is a medium sized doodle.

Sophie is a gorgeous girl and has a personality to match! She is one of the sweetest, most gentle and loving doodles we have had the pleasure of meeting. Originally purchased from a reputable breeder at 8 weeks, Sophie went to live in a penthouse in the big city. At 6 months, she somehow ingested a dead pigeon carcass and became very sick. Upon x-ray, it was discovered that poor Sophie has a very mild and completely manageable form of "idiopathic megaesophagus" and her breeder insisted she be returned for placement into a more appropriate home. Dogs with M.E. can lead perfectly normal and healthy lives with care and consistency. They simply require a specific food regimen and a consistent feeding schedule.

ABOUT MEGAESOPHAGUS

Megaesophagus is a condition where there is decreased or absent motility (movement, muscle contractions) of the esophagus. It is often congenital, but can also be "idiopathic" meaning "unexplainable." In Sophie's case, her mild M.E. is being attributed to her ingestion of the pigeon carcass and the esophageal irritation she sustained. With M.E.,the esophagus becomes enlarged due to lack of motility; thus the term "mega." Dogs with severe cases of this condition have difficulty passing food all the way to the stomach and the food is instead regurgitated back up into the throat. Without proper care or assistance, severely affected dogs tend to have difficulty maintaining adequate nutrition and a healthy weight due to their inability to move food into the gastrointestinal tract. Dogs with severe ME also have a higher risk of developing "aspiration pneumonia" if regurgitated food and water get into the lungs. Thankfully, special feeding protocols, easily digestible yet highly nutritious foods and a special feeding chair called a "Bailey Chair" have been developed specifically for dogs with this condition. The "Bailey Chair" allows gravity to push food and water into the stomach and has had an incredible success rate!

Sophie's M.E is so mild, she does not even require the assistance of a Bailey Chair. What she does require is 3 to 4 small and softened meals a day, limited exercise for an hour after meals and a family that is home for most of the day to ensure Sophie is receiving proper amounts of water and nutrition.

Other than her M.E. Sophie is a very happy, healthy and "cuddley" young doodle with tons of love to give to the right family. She loves to play, loves to go for walks, rides in the car and snuggle with her people. She is completely house trained, has basic obedience skills, gets along wonderfully with other dogs and is friendly and social. She will need a dog-savvy adult home where someone is around for a large of the day. Sophie would love to have another calm, well-mannered dog in the house for company.


Sophie would be a wonderful companion for retirees, active seniors, anyone who works from home and has time and room in their heart for a very special soul with some minor special needs. Sophie is spayed, micro-chipped and UTD on all vaccines and preventatives. She will be a wonderful addition to the right family.

DRC Adoption Donations range from: $250 - $500 and vary according to the age, health, temperament and location of each dog.

DRC does not adopt rescue doodles to first time dog owners or families with children under the age of 10. If you have children between the ages of 10-18 living in the home, they must have dog-experience and a history of living with dogs in the home. We also require that your yard be surrounded by a physical fence of at least 4 feet in height.
