Meet Poppy

Hiya!  I'm Poppy a happy go lucky three month old double dapple dachshund puppy.  I love love love running around, but my most favourite thing is to be curled up in my foster moms lap or next to her on the couch!  I trail my foster parents around the house and don't ever let them forget where I am.  If I get stuck I will let them know with a song .. :)  I like to pounce on my foster siblings, but they don't think its as fun as I do heheh!  I sure would love to find a home of my own, what do you think?  are you the one for me? and now a word from my foster mom!

Poppy is a double dapple, mostly white coat with dark brown markings. What is a dapple?  Dapple is a coat pattern, you might have a red dapple with some white dappling or darker red dappling.  A double dapple is the result of breeding two dapples together.  The resulting genetic outcome see's both the mom and dad's dapple gene passed onto the puppy.  Essentially the dapple from the mom overwrites the dapple gene from the dad and you get the non symmetrical pattering (one coloured leg and one white) and a large amount of white in the coat. You will also see a blue eye or a partial blue eye.

While the coat outcome may appear beautiful the other possible defects include dogs being born without eyes or ears, or being born deaf, or being born with an underdeveloped eye(s), or being born blind or any combination thereof.

Responsible breeders will carefully identify their dogs and pups as?dapples and would never breed two of the same together!

A double dapple is not to be confused with a piebald, which is a?normal dachshund colour with varying amounts of white.  One of the main differences will be the symmetry of the markings, such as if one ear is brown the other ear will be brown and so on.

Poppy is deaf, is missing one eye and has limited vision in the other.  Not that you would know it watching her zoom around the house.  Poppy truly is the quintessential puppy, but she will need a home that has patience and understanding and is willing to work with her and her limitations in hearing and vision.

We are working on her house-training and she is doing very well on a schedule, but does have the occasional accident in the house!  She loves to go for walks, walks amazingly well along side her people and likes to pounce on her fur foster brothers just to be sure they are paying attention!

She loves to run around the house, she navigates very well and only has issues if furniture is moved around.  She mastered the doggy steps to the couch and the big bed in the first five minutes of arriving in our home.  She likes to stalk her fur siblings, pouncing on them in the hopes of enticing some play!

She will wander the house and climb up on the couch, but seems to understand that it is to high to get down, and she will whine and cry to let you know that she is stuck!

She knows where the back door is and will go out on her own if she has access, she likes laying on the deck in the sun in the assumed frog leg position.  She is a great eater, right now we are feeding her two to three times per day.  She is a snuggler and loves to find a lap to cuddle up in on the couch.  She loves chewing on her nylabone or rope and learning that fingers and blankets are not for eating!

She has done will meeting other dogs both big and small, and likes responsible children over the age of 12.

I would say that her biggest issue is that she hates to be crated.  I assume that with no hearing and little vision, she is very isolated when crated alone.  We are working with her though and she spends time in the crate when needed.  That being said she starts off her night in the crate and is then allowed to sleep in the big bed.  She will sleep through the night without incident, normally tucked in against either of us.  Touch is a huge thing for this puppy!

Poppy will be scheduled for her spay and will be ready for her forever home once she has recovered!

She is beautiful and she is a puppy!  As cute as she is we know that puppys take a lot of time and commitment.  Are you up for the challenge?
