Meet Joanie
Six-year old Joanie and her best bud, Davy, were used solely as breeding dogs and it shows. Not only were these little Pekingese incredibly shy when they arrived at ACS, their now white coats were stained dark yellow on their legs, belly and tail from being forced to sit and sleep in their own urine month after month.  Although it's obvious that Joanie hadn't had a lot of positive contact from humans prior to coming to ACS, she has surprised us by how quickly she's become more comfortable being petted and held. She may have a grumpy expression on her face but she loves to give kisses and has a very affectionate nature. Joanie needs a patient owner, preferably one who has experience with puppy-mill dogs, and a quiet environment where she can continue to relax and learn to be a dog and not just a breeding machine. Her new home will also require a fenced yard since Joanie is terrified of being leash-walked. She loves running in our yard and when she's out there romping around, her true personality shines through. It's such a joy to see because she's so happy. Considering that she's lived almost her entire life in a crate, Joanie's doing remarkably well with crate-training but we don't know if she is housetrained. The Pekingese is generally described as an affectionate noble dog that is intelligent and brave but can be self-centered and stubborn. It will choose who will be its 'boss.' The Pekingese needs praise when it does something well and should not be disciplined too harshly when it does something wrong or it may withdraw and pout as its feelings are easily hurt. Since it doesn't like to be disturbed when resting, it is not really suitable for a household with young children. Most will usually get along well with other household pets and, because it has relatively small demands for exercise, it is an ideal dog for people who don't like exercise themselves. Careful grooming is an essential part of caring for this breed.  Joanie may need a little work but for the person who's willing to give this 'diamond in the rough' a chance, we think she'll become a gem of companion!  We would love it if Joanie and Davy could go to the same home.   To find out if sweet little Joanie would be a good fit for you and your household, just stop by the shelter and ask to meet her. /// JOANIE IS SPONSORED BY LAURA TAYLOR & FAMILY THRU AUGUST 2013 IN HONOR OF ALL THE PUPPY MILL DOGS THAT NEVER GET A SECOND CHANCE AT HAPPINESS.
