Meet Barney

Update 10/26/11 - Barney is about 5 months old and still looking for his adoptive home. He is completely crate trained and housetrained if supervised. He is a typical puppy and loves to run, play and go on leash walks. Barney runs and plays just like any other dog. He is extremely intelligent and needs an owner who will continue his training and not spoil him because he has had a traumatic past. Barney knows sit and no well. Barney sleeps through the night in his crate and lets his foster know when he needs to go outside for potty time. Barney is a great boy, is about 30 pounds now and will most likely be about 60 pounds when full grown.

Barney is a friendly and very brave little Lab / German Shepherd mix puppy. Barney is only about 9 weeks old (as of August 1st, 2011), but he’s already had to cope with more than any little pup should have to deal with. Turns out that one morning just as he was about to savor his breakfast (Barney REALLY likes his breakfast), Barney got into an altercation with a big dog. There was nothing that little Barney could do, and sadly one of Barney’s legs was so badly injured he had to have the leg removed. Four hours after surgery Barney was up and hobbin’ about, tail a waggin’, and looking for a face to lick. He was also looking for his breakfast – no kidding, even after going through major surgery Barney STILL wanted his kibble. This is a pup with a winning and never quit attitude. He loves his toys, especially his three legged toy horse, and adores his human friends. He loves to be picked up and cuddled, and after some kissy licks he drifts off to sleep. It’s going to take a little time for Barney to fully recover, so please contact DogsOnly by email at contact@dogsonly.org to find out when he will be attending the DogsOnly adoption showings. Barney should do fine on three legs; he’s already running about and playing like nothing was amiss. Please remember that puppies will probably grow up to be first-class canine companions. However Barney, like all young dogs, is not for a family seeking an "easy" puppy because there is no such thing. Please remember that as beautiful and cuddly as Barney is at the moment, he will grow into adult canine companion in no time at all. You should be prepared for the usual trial of rearing a young puppy including the chewing, crying, potty training, and constant demands. For this reason we would prefer that Barney’s new family is experienced and understands his special puppy needs. Remember, just like kids, puppies grow up real fast, and need lots of patience, love and attention along the way.

Please don’t be tempted to adopt Barney on an impulse. You should take the time to carefully consider the long term commitment, expense, and passion it takes to give him the home he deserves. He’ll reward you with unbounded love and devotion, but you must be committed and serious about your decision to bring him into your life. Remember, this is an adoption, not a sale, and we’re very serious about making sure that both you and Barney are a good match for each other.

DogsOnly adoption fee ranges from $100 - $150 depending on the dog and helps to reimburse our expenses for all of the necessary vet care that we have provided to include: spay or neuter (mandatory - no exceptions, rabies, micro-chipping and registration, all vaccinations (including all puppy shots, rabies, adult boosters and Bordatella, grooming, Frontline for flea/tick preventative, heartworm check if age appropriate and monthly preventative for all ages while in foster care, collar and 50% of basic training classes. The adoption fee does not reimburse for all our expenses and covers only a portion of most expenses involved in rehabilitating our rescues and returning them to health. Please keep this in mind when you are adopting a dog.

Our available rescues can be met in person at our weekly adoption showing at the West Little Rock Petco on Chenal Parkway across from Target and Home Depot. This is in the same strip mall as Old Navy and Shoe Carnival. Our showing hours are from 1-4 every Saturday except major holiday weekends.

Email contact is contact@dogsonly.org Due to time restraints, we are not able to accept phone calls but we always try and answer all emails within 24 hours. All of our young and adult dogs are available for a 2 week home visit before finalizing the adoption process (local adoptions only). This is to help ensure it is a good match for all involved without making a final commitment. Puppies under the age of 6 months are not available to go on home visits. All of our rescues are in private homes and not available to be visited outside of showing times. All of our foster homes work with our rescues to ensure they are crate trained and most are also housetrained. None of our foster homes have cats, so we can only make our best guess as to how our rescues would do with cats. We rescue from high kill shelters and once accepted into our program, none of our rescues are euthanized. We provide for all their vet care, socialization and training until an appropriate home can be found. We rely solely on donations and are a 501(c)3 Humane Society.

Thank you for your interest in rescue and in saving the life of a dog. Every day in the United States, 11,000 dogs are euthanized.
