Meet Pepito

Pepito has been in foster care since July 2011, when he came to Speaking of Dogs Rescue from a puppy mill in Quebec. When he arrived he was completely traumatized and had trust issues. He was nervous of people, new situations and being physically handled. When he first went to his foster home, he disliked being in a crate and would circle continuously in a state of anxiety. He hated car rides, he didn't know how to go up and down stairs, hadn't gone for walks, and didn't know how to walk on a leash. Over time (and with an amazing foster mom) he has learned stairs, can walk on a leash, does much better in the car; especially when he is with his foster doggy friends, and best of all he loves his crate now. He sleeps in his crate all night and when his foster mom goes out without any circling or anxiety. He can often be found going into his crate on his own when he wants a nap. He gets along very well with other dogs, often looking to play. He loves his food and treats, and what was once a sign of anxiety has now become a sign of excitement by circling to get his treat. He is still sensitive about being touched, he is generally fine being held but it is hard to pet him, he will squirm to be put back down. When he meets people for the first time he takes time to warm up so anyone interested in adopting him need to understand that his trust has to be earned. Because he is so cute people who see him want to immediately pick him up and cuddle with him, but for Pepito that is extremely frightening and stressful, he needs someone who will be patient until he’s ready. He is a funny boy with a lot of silly ways, and can be very entertaining to be around. He is very much needs to find his forever home preferably with someone who is experienced with puppy mill/traumatized cases and can appreciate the progress he has made, and observe his relationship with the foster mother – as that is what will come it just takes time. Good things come to those who wait is our motto for Pepito.
