Pokie came to us from a senior couple who did not have a fenced yard. They were worried about him getting away and not being able to find him or call him back because .... Pokie is deaf. They adopted Pokie from someone breeding Dachshunds who had been trying to use him as a stud. As the story goes, Pokie was not too cooperative about this and eventually was given away. Poke is a special needs dog and as handsome as he is will need a sensible owner with a big heart ! He has some interesting quirks that can be a little intimidating until understood. However, for the compassionate dog or dachshund lover who is willing to embrace him 'as is' ... he'll be a good little pet. He loves to cuddle in a nice warm lap and like most Doxies, burrows under the covers. He's very good with other dogs, hasn't shown a lot of interest in the cats, and loves to ride in the car. Due to the deafness, we do not want to place him in a home with young children. He could probably manage supervised visits with children but it's hard to explain to a young child about deafness and startling a dog. Poke is learning his house manners quite readily with consistent management. As we've come to know Pokie, his endearing personality has overshadowed his quirky behaviors and we think someone else will enjoy and love him as well.
