Hello, my name is Bill. I’m really nervous about telling you my story, but the humans I trust tell me that this is a good way to try and find a home of my own. In general, people really scare me. I hope I don’t sound like a wimp…I don’t WANT for people to seem scary, but life has been hard and I have a little “leftover memories stuff” going on. OK, maybe if I fill you in, this will start to make more sense.

I came to the rescue when I was very small…at about the age when it would just be safe for me to leave my mother. Before the rescue’s people came and got me, I was somewhere called a “pound” and apparently, that does not end well for many dogs. I feel very lucky to be here today to tell you my story. I arrived at the rescue very skinny and very hungry, and clinging to my two brothers who I loved very much. This is difficult for me to talk about, but one of my brothers died immediately. He had a very contagious disease called “Parvo” and the treatment couldn’t save him. My other brother, Beau, and I were tough…somehow we never got sick. Here is the tricky part though…see, we COULD have shown symptoms and gotten sick at any moment, so we had to be kept separate from the other puppies. Quarantine is a real pain, and it usually means that the puppies IN quarantine only get handled by one or two people on a regular basis. That was another situation that added to my “stuff”. It’s really easy to become shy when you don’t get out much. So, even though I never got sick, I definitely have scars from the illness that killed my brother.

Beau and I stayed together at the rescue for a few months, and then Beau was adopted. It sure was exciting for him, but I was very sad when he left. I have made several other friends since my brother left me, but one by one, they keep leaving me too. Humans keep choosing them to be a part of their families. I am very happy for them, but to tell you the truth, I am very sad for me. I’m not sure why no one wants me. I have been here for about 6 months now, and nobody really pays me any attention on adoption days.

I know that being shy is not something that many humans want to see in their dog, and maybe that is why no one wants me. So, I am trying very hard to get better about that. The humans at the rescue are helping me, and we practice all the time. I sure wish people would give me a chance though…you see I am one of those guys who is very shy when you first meet, but who warms up and is kind and loving and fun when he feels comfortable around you. It just seems like everyone is in such a HURRY these days, and isn’t willing to give a guy a chance to get comfortable.

If you aren’t in a big hurry, and think you might like to help me come out of my shell a little bit, I’d love for you to stop by. I’d be happy to spend time with any of you, though I must tell you that if you are a man, it will take me even longer to warm up. Men scare me. More of that “stuff” from my early days. Please don’t be offended if you come to visit and I don’t come snuggle right away---it’s not that I don’t like you, I just like to take things slow. Who knows, maybe you’re the one who will save me from my “stuff and give me that happy ending I have been waiting so very long for.

Ready to take some big steps forward,

Bill

p.s. Because of the flood, I have been staying at my Aunt Amy’s house for a few days, with my dog cousins and my cat cousins. I wanted to let you know that I am really, really getting the hang of this house-living-stuff! I have not had ANY accidents, and am being very good about staying quietly in my crate in the kitchen when I need to. I sleep quietly through the night in the crate without any complaints. I am playing well with Oscar and Gunny (my dog cousins), and although I am not allowed to be loose around the cat cousins, I have not made any moves that indicate that I would have any problems living with cats. I have never had a chance to really play and be a puppy and enjoy life in a home, so once I warmed up, I did show my Aunt Amy how much I love to play. Turns out, I would love to live with people that like to do fun stuff, like go for long walks. And I‘d love to live with another dog that loves to play and run and wrestle! I have a lot of lost time to make up for in the having fun department!

Bill is up to date on all of his shots, has been micro chipped and neutered. He is heartworm negative and is on preventative medicine the way that all dogs should be! Bill loves other dogs, though he can get a little fussy about sharing his food. He shares toys without any problems. Bill seems to like cats from what we have seen here with NMAR’s Feline Administrator, Thomas.
