Meet Kona

Kona came to us from a county shelter with too many dogs and too little funding. She has a slightly deformed right ear, someone botched the job on her tail docking, she has wrinkles galore on her head, is prematurely gray (estimated birth date is Jan 2007) and she is the biggest tom boy dog you are ever going to meet. Princess? Not our Kona. She runs and plays with the best of them and doesn't give a whiff about her appearance. Neither do we.

Kona is full of energy! She loves to run, run and run some more. Her personality is XXL, a very engaging dog and quite funny to boot. Almost like she knows she is making you laugh with her silly little antics. On home visits one of her favorite things to do is dig. But not in the yard, with the pillows on the bed. Once satisfied she buries her head under a mound of pillows and blankets, then once she hears us laugh, she pops her head out and gives a little wink and a smirk.

She loves to go on walks. She snorts like a pig as she sniffs every inch of fresh ground with the hound dog nose of hers. She is a wonderful companion in the car and will sit calmly in the back. She is very smart. She loves when you hide toys and test her to see if she can find them. She loves a good challenge. She likes most dogs – especially those that like to play crazy sometimes. Past playmates have been twice her size. On her home visits she seems to be ok with the cats, almost afraid of them.

Kona likes to take her time before getting to know you. She does not like for people to be up in her face (99% of humans do not like this either) or to grab her from behind. She will let you know if you are invading her space. She makes friends easily at STAF as we respect this. She loves to be with us, we love to be with her. She brightens our day. She has made many of us laugh, most recently as we gave her a blue collar. Why blue? We just knew she would not be happy with a pink one. If you give her a chance she’ll soon become your best friend. Another dog in the home to help her burn off her energy would be great, but if you are very active she would do well with a lot of activities also, physical and mental. Also since Kona takes her time getting to know you she will do best in a home with older (12+) and very active children! We think Kona is some kind of special! We know that you will think so too.

She will be a wonderful, fun and very trusted friend. Want to come and meet Kona? We advise you to bring a McDonald’s cheeseburger with you (she prefers no onion please). In Kona’s “get to know you” book you’ll get a great big gold star next to your name right away.

Please see our homepage for visiting hours and adoption details.

All of our animals are spayed/neutered and current on shots.
You must complete an application at the shelter prior to meeting any of our animals. (Sorry--our application is not available on-line or via email.)
We do not do same-day adoptions; we ask that you return for a follow-up visit before taking an animal home.
We require a fenced yard (sorry--no invisible fences) for homes with children under age 13.
We do request vet and personal references.
At this time, we are only able to consider applicants within 150 miles of Cincinnati.

Can’t adopt but want to help? You can make a difference! Our shelter is run entirely on volunteer-power and generous donations from animal-lovers like you. 100% of your contribution goes directly to caring for our 500+ furry residents. Thank you for your support.
