Happy Tail: An Australian Shepherd's eyes win a home
Tue, Apr 15
As Sherry Rentz gazed at her computer monitor, the eyes of the dog on her screen mesmerized her. She was suffering over the loss to cancer of her beloved dog, Cassidy, an Australian Shepherd, and had been looking on Petfinder for another pooch to fill the emptiness in her heart.
Now a beautiful red/merle Aussie named Lady, who was listed on Petfinder by Huntsville Animal Services in Alabama, captured her attention. “It was uncanny how much this dog’s eyes reminded me of Cassidy,” the Moultrie, GA, woman says.
She immediately emailed Gabi, who was fostering Lady, to see if the dog was still available and she was. Sherry teaches English Learners part time, but the approaching President’s Day weekend would provide enough leeway to drive to Huntsville and back, so she made arrangements to meet Lady at the shelter.
“I will never forget the day,” she says. “It was wintery, cold and windy, but I enjoy days like that so it only added to my anticipation of meeting Lady.” At the appointed time, she watched as Lady got out of Gabi’s car.
“My first words were, ‘She’s so beautiful.’” Sherry kneeled down and hugged the dog. Tears welled in her eyes. It had only been a month since she’d lost Cassidy, and she was overcome with emotion. Lady’s reaction to the hug, or the tears, seemed to show that she knew how much Sherry needed her. “I knew in my heart Lady was the Aussie I’d prayed for.”
Sherry and Lady got acquainted for a little while, and she learned more about the dog from Gabi, with whom she has stayed in touch. “Lady was an owner surrender,” Sherry says. When the dog came to the shelter, she had a urinary tract infection and had recently had puppies. The shelter treated her and had her spayed, and then she went into foster care and was listed on Petfinder where, through the miracle of the web, she found a home in Georgia.
